I'm still kicking myself for forgetting to bid on a 1940 Wenger that went for 25,50 Euro last month.

Yep have to say that was a good buy if you look at the acceptance marks on the scale it has the normal  WK mark plus 2 additional stamps and  that is very rare.

My almost complete run of alox soldiers from 1962 to 2008.
Most are in new shape with everything after 1976 being new in box.
Will post some more photos soon.

Wow quite a set !!  8)
How come the 71 one is red - I thought red ones stopped in 66.
And can you tell us please what is the black one at the end.

Also interested ....
Wengers?/Viccies?/ Or roughly what percentage of each.
Also if they are pretty much all NIB since 76 - How did you do that??  ???
Have you been collecting them since then and bought one each year??

Thanks  :)

The red Elsener 71 was a rare find new in box.
I've seen red alox soldiers all the way until 1978.
The black soldier was sold in Swiss Railway stores in the 1980's I believe.
A very rare knife now and I have two of them.
They are all Elsener and Victorinox soldiers with one exception being a 1972 Wenger as I don't think Victorinox made one that year.   The same applies for 1974 which I still need to find.
I've been collecting the alox soldier for a few years now.
I just bought any that I found and then started trading with other collectors.
I was then offered a very large collection of alox which had quite a lot of brand new soldiers included.
Most of the fun was finding them and slowly replacing any used ones with a new example when possible.

That's nuts - And this was when it was not out of hand ?? :o

Did a rough quick tally and there seem to be at least 150
So not just collecting one per year then??  Or even one from each manufacturer per year

My first Wenger SI.   :)  I'm struggling to find much difference between the Wenger and the Vic, apart from the bail obviously.  I thought there would be a year stamped on the tang like my Vic, but alas there isn't.

... I'm struggling to find much difference between the Wenger and the Vic, apart from the bail obviously.  I thought there would be a year stamped on the tang like my Vic, but alas there isn't.

Look at the back of the blade. The Wenger has a thicker spine almost all the way to the tip and the Vic tappers down. (Black Pioneer used for representation, old pics from an earlier thread)

Also the Wengers have a pointier awl. (Wenger SI in the middle)

The lack of year stamp is cause it wasn't issued. They continued to make them for sale to civilians even after the army stopped buying 93mm and started buying 111mm. The last ones even come without the shield.

Post by: Spatha on January 27, 2014, 08:27:49 PM
Thanks, Enki.     I hadn't noticed the thicker spine on the knife blade, but i like it.   >:D   :D

With regards to the year stamp, I guess I should have been thinking of it as being more like an equivalent to the Vic Pioneer rather than the Soldier.

Also the Wengers have a pointier awl. (Wenger SI in the middle)

Looking at my awls, I reckon the Vic Soldier's is slightly pointier.     In these photos: left to right, Vic Soldier '05, Wenger SI, Vic Electrician.  (Same order for both photos.)

Usually the Wenger awl has one more grind that the Vic does not have, on the top side of the point, making it sharper.

Hey, can you show the red Elsener 71 box? I would like to know the No. for the old type soldier. Thanks :salute:

Congratulations I thought I was doing well to get one 58 (58 is one of the hardest (and most expensive) years to find)

I put the effort in to get nice 66's as its my year (if anyone has a red Wenger please let me know ;)  )

Great pictures!  This prompted me to ask a question that I have had for some time.  On my very meager collection of Soldiers, I have noticed that the shield color is much darker on some knives than others.  Some of mine are a deep red where others are almost orange.  I noticed the same in these pictures.  For example the second Solider from the front is much darker.

Have the shield colors varied from year to year, or is this just a matter of fading?

From what I can tell from my own Soldier collection is that the newer Soldiers and Standard Issues have a darker red, much like the red found on standard silver alox models with the Victorinox shield. While the older models, '90s and earlier, have a more orange-red-ish appearance.

Edit: I should state that this is pure speculation on my part, I could be wrong. Hopefully someone more knowledgable on Soldiers can chime in.

You righ, I didn't notice this one before.
Dark one, from my photo is from 2003, also 2004 that I have is also dark  (6th knife on photo).
First knife on photo is from 1988.
So I though that younger models are with dark shield, but 2006 shield is a little bit lighter color  ??? .

Last year I missed the release of this very interesting book on the Soldier Knives.
Le couteau du soldat de l'armée suisse  (The Soldier Knives of the Swiss Army)

It's written in French, so unfortunately I can't yet say how good it is, but it does have a large number of photographs that are useful.  Any members here read this book?

Haven't read the book but I have looked at their website:

http://www.couteaux-du-soldat-suisse.ch/J01/index.php/en/les-couteaux-du-soldat/les-modeles-1961

Lots of good info on all Soldier models.

And just as I suspected, the dark red shield started in 2003/2004.

Edit: Here is my collection of the 5 major type 1961 variants.

Indeed, the 1993 version to be precise ;)

Before 1993, they were the standard Alox Soldier, with a date stamp on the scales. Since 2010, the DAK is a Dual Pro with a Phillips instead of a corkscrew, and no dual density scales.

I especially like the newer version, the 2010 I got was off a forum member and that has been my edc for a few weeks now.

Folks that collect them see this as the terminus year of the Vic Soldiers so want one in their collection. That drives the price along with condition. I haven't seen any production numbers but I guess it's possible there were less made that year as well.

Workman is a early name for the red alox version of the Pioneer Settler. In some markets the earlier version with a small clip blade was the Duo. Numbers for the clip version without bail are:  2205 / 0.8050.20.

I was sharpening my 90 Wenger SI when I noticed there was faint engraving on the blade.
The blade is very scratched so it can only be seen with light reflecting a certain way.
It says "Jahre" on the right with a crossbow in the center and I believe "100" on the left.
Anyone have any idea what this was?
Or seen other Soldiers with anything similar?(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/11/ty2yde9y.jpg)

Their belly is a bit longer, and the Vic Soldier has a more severe curve towards the tip. :) I prefer the blade shape of the Wenger SI. One of the best pocket knives ever made, I think.

There were some Vic Soldiers with a bail. I think it was '93... I had one and sold it to SAKmikey I think...

I only have 4 soldier knife: 2006 victorinox, 2001 Wenger, unknown year Wenger, and 2013 Victorinox.
The last Picture, from mirror you can see, it really doesn't have year mark.

This looks like a good place to ask this question, what's with the hollow rivet??  ???

On issue 61 Series, the hollow rivet was an attachment point for a length of cord/chain that was hung on the front of the Swiss service rifle and provided the correct angle (elevation) for firing rifle grenades.

IIRC.

Thanks SAK Guy. Talk about a outdated method no wonder they  have a solid rivet now.

I love the patina on this old '39.  One of these days I need to commission a resident expert to fashion some new scales for me.

I'm guessing it has never been sharpened, or at least very little.  You can see where the belly of the blade is notched where it contacts the backspring.

These have all given service and have the scars to prove it.
They are all scheduled for some R&R&R and hopefully will be looking and feeling better in the near future.

'Bout time I assembled my army and 'Showed my Soldiers'  :salute:

Just one Soldier for each of the major generational changes for me:
I have got a few others - Like my family's birth-year Soldiers and a couple of old pre 61 ones that I may restore or do something with
And I don't really care if the Soldiers are Wengers or Vics
And I am sure there are other minor or even major variations: eg stamps - I would quite like a 'VICTORIA ELSENER SCHWYZ' tang stamped early Vic alox Soldier; tool widths, PAT stamp etc

However I am happy with my army!!

EDIT: Oops - Just noticed I wrote WC not WK - Corrected :) ;)

So Vics never had the bail? I know I've seen some Vic Soldiers with the same style lanyard as the Pioneer.

Some Vics were sold with bail to civilians on Soldiers, Pioneers, Farmers.

DTT was after a BAK so I engaged Bloodhound mode and found him one. At least there are two BAK's in the US now.  :tu:

Those darn blister packs!!!  I just scored a NIB  '07 Soldier... How do I know it's an '07?  Slide box.   :D

Better not open it if you ever wanna sell it, else no care.
That's why I prefer actual boxes, you can keep things mint but at least looking at them closely once in a while.. Without ripping off the package

- I am definitely a 'busy life' rather than a 'NIB' guy for my older SAKs - although I don't like it if they are wrecked / badly sharpened etc

Although I gotta say these two are AMAZING!   :D   - Not seen that Wenger stamp before  :tu:
Elsener and Wenger soldiers, 1908-1915
  the 68 was the first time is thought of having a shelf queen but I'd much rather use it than having it sat somewhere doing nothing.  Even if I had one of the really old ones I'd still use it - no point in having it otherwise.
Thanks once again to El C - it's a beaut.
:iagree: I can’t have anything and not use what it was intended for. It was made for a reason.

Earlier this year I helped my brother find his BYSAK, a '62 Vx.  He just sent me this picture of the knife in use, on the shore of Lake Michigan.

I think so, just judging by many I see out there anyway.  Unless I’m mistaken the ‘62 is the first year of issue for the model 1961, too.

That is correct on ‘62 was the first year of the model ‘61.

This 1976 soldier is scheduled to arrive today:

Little by little, I've been trying to acquire a sample of each knife on the left (Soldiers) in the photo below.
With the addition coming today, I'll still need to find the top one 1891, and 3rd one 1951.

I soaked it all night in Dawn dish detergent.  It usually breaks up grease and grime.  No luck.

You might have to use a stronger degreaser
Maybe something like alloy
wheel cleaner or engine degreaser

Toothbrush or wooden toothpicks didn’t help either??? If the Dawn didn’t help it could very well be stained and not gunk in there.

If so than you won’t remove it with degreaser  >:(

Would toothpaste work?  I've used it in the past on items I didn't want damaged.

Thank you all, it's definitely a shade lighter after using toothbrush and toothpaste.
Need to look in the garage for something stronger.

That is a shame FB! :(

Thank you all for the suggestions, but due to the condition, I have put in a request to return to the seller.

**EDIT - the seller offered me a partial refund instead of returning it, so I took that and will work on buying some more cleaning products.

@FB - I would go for regular metal polish and a toothbrush - It's mildly abrasive  - The knife will come up beautifully

In the UK this would be Brasso, or something like Autosol

I hope everyone is enjoying he holiday week.  I like to use time off to finish up articles on my blog -- this particular one was a long time in writing, and I thought that all my MTO Swiss Army Knight friends would enjoy the picture I used on the title page.

Very, very nice articles and pictures Myron - Excellent - Thank you for sharing
........ You must have quite a collection - I could not tell if you have all the years or just a selection - I think the latter - Right?

Love the maple leaf Pioneer and the 'mystery' Soldier, also the Black Beauty .... and poor man's Black Beauty!!  ;)

Was interested that there was no mention of here (MTo), SAKWiki or Sosak/Swiss Army Knights in your 'sources'.
This is where I get most of my info - I guess your blog is much more detailed!

Hi Huntsman,

Thanks!  You are correct, my collection consists of selected representative Model 1961 SAKs.  In time I may go after every year of issue, but I am a married man after all....  ;)

Regarding my oversight in not mentioning MTo or SAKWiki, I have just corrected this.  I actually had this thought, since I owe much of what I know to these two amazing resources and the collecting community, but I finished this post up at 4 AM last night and simply forgot.  Writing for me is an organic process, and I try to jot down ideas when they occur to me, to be fleshed out later.  This one just slipped through the cracks.   At any rate, check it now...

Thanks again for the compliments and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Best,

Myron

A couple of months ago I asked for some expert opinions on a 1908 model lookalike I found on a local auction site, which I later bought, but forgot to show it off here. So, here it goes, just to document it: a perhaps German copy - counterfeit would be a bit strong, as it's not claiming to be a real SAK - of the 1908, with only an "INOX" tang stamp. Most likely from the 30-40's.

I’m missing variants 3 (red alox) and 4a (no WK stamp on box, never issued to soldiers)

Soldier 1961 Facts:

Did you know that 1993 is one of those “Transition Years” in terms of Soldatenmesser evolution... It is the year when the hollow rivet and the sharpened edge (wire stripper) on the bottle opener/caplifter were withdrawn...

Yes, they used carbon steel for soldiers knives till 1950. Mod.1951 used stainless steel.

@ Jnoxyd  - Those are real beauties and so so old - Wow
Funny .... Even though they are the original, original Swiss Army Knife - They are so far away from what most members of the public would imagine to be a SAK !!

@ Philodemus  - How is that '63 in such good condition - It must never have been issued or maybe issued to a general who never sullied it!!

Love this thread guys !! - Thanks for all the contributions
