Here are two that have jigged wood handles to simulate bone. The Olcut(Union Cutlery Co.)I have had for years. You really have to examine it closely to see that it is wood and not bone.
The second one I got yesterday and I again thought it was jigged bone until I got looking at it under a loupe.

The Wave was on my belt through the morning until lunch.  My matched set, also have a 112, but that would be to much! The 55 is riding in  front right pocket and the 110 rode in the pouch in back right along with walking stick as I ventured through Eagle March near by to see if I could spot the nesting bald eagles.  Found the nest but not the birds.  Temps in upper 90s with feel like temps near 105.  Shower to cool off and rinse off bug spray.

Here is one that I used to carry a lot because of it's light weight. Never could get into Buck 110's because they felt too handle heavy for me and my hand would cramp with heavy use. This is a Gerber Model 1 (also called the Gunstock model).Very light in weight and very sturdy. I stopped carrying it when I found out the ridiculous prices they were selling for;especially in Japan.

Here is another one I used to carry a lot.It is actually lighter than it looks. Made by Track Knives for Ithaca Gun Works this one was purchased well used at a flea market for $5 about 30 years ago. Blade was very pitted;probably from having animal blood left on it after being used.Serial # 775 with Ithaca logo(stylized bear paw) Cleaned up nicely and holds a mean edge(convex ground). No nail mark(not needed) and it locks up solid when opened. I still carry it occasionally and it is light enough to comfortably carry in the pocket.

Nice one! I have an Ithaca 20GA Super Single that was my great-uncles that I've been learning how to shoot (most of my life, I've messed with air rifles and .22s). Remington, Beretta, Winchester, and Remington knives seem pretty easy to find, but these Ithaca ones aren't, especially cheap. That's why I mostly collect Camillus and Bear and Sons Remingtons (and I do have a beat up, but original 1930s Remington BSA).

As it is now 2:07am Wednesday in my time zone I figured I would post these before I hit the hay. Although these are not quite what you would(wood?) call every day carry knives they are fun.
First up is an Italian stiletto(non-automatic)that is around 8 inches(20cm)long CLOSED! Nice wood handles(not sure exactly what type of wood);brass bolsters and a handful to carry!
Next is a navaja style knife almost 9 inches(23cm)long with wood scales jigged to look like bone and some fancy acid etched designs on the blade. Top lock is a ratcheting mechanism allowing the blade to lock in a number of positions.
Next is everyone's favorites here: An Opinel No.2 and No.13 together. Sort of like a mother and child pose. :D
And last is a totally wood knife made as a display piece(I guess)for the Catawba Valley Knife Club. No idea where that is;I bought it on e-Bay many years ago.

Though not folding knives these should qualify for Wood Wednesday. Bought them several months apart but the look to have been made by the same person. Nothing special about the knife but the sheath  is made of wood as well! I think I paid about $15 apiece for them only because they were so unique.

Thought I'd post this one up for WHW. Stamped "F.A.Koch & Co. NY" it is a real handful. When I got it there was a large piece missing out of the pile side handle.Last night I took it out in the shop and cut and fit a piece of wood in and glued it up. Today I shaped it and dyed it using India ink. Still needs a little finish work but I don't intend to make it perfect as the knife is far from perfect.Blade is short but shaving sharp and is currently residing in my pocket for a few days.

There are some awesome knives posted here.

Congrats to all of the owners.

This is a Puma 725 four star  ****.It's the size of a Buck 112 Ranger.  The handle had some rather obvious and large cracks. So  I was able to buy it at 60 to 70% below retail.I resolved,to a large degree the "cracks" issue. This was 25 years ago.I still have the green and yellow plastic box in which it was shipped from Germany.

No multi blade options, with M390 that might start getting a little pricey.

This is a Gerber Magnum Folding Hunter from 1983.I still have the receipt and box for this knife among other knives that I bought at the same time.

The Gerber family was very influential in the knife business for decades.Knife makers such as Pete Kershaw and Al Mar once worked for Pete Gerber, before they struck out on their own to start their companies.

Thought I'd post this one up for your viewing pleasure.Custom made by someone who had the talent but for some strange reason did not stamp his name on it.Blade is flat ground with a convex edge and machined nail mark. Handles appear to be Brazilian rosewood and are dovetailed as are the bolsters which requires only one pin at the extreme rear to hold the handles in place.Thick brass liners are slightly beveled on the edges to allow the blade to close without catching on them. Not a locking blade and there is no sideplay at all in the blade.

Very nice color and contrasting streaks,Steve.

Looks like Cocobolo.

Here is a custom by David Boye with desert ironwood for the handle. The shot of the handle looks as if the wood is rough but it's not. It's as smooth a a baby's bottom.LOL  It's the depth and contrasting color that gives that appearance.

I can see why you might say that.  Bird's eye maple is difficult to reproduce well in a picture.  It's gorgeous, and even a bit mesmerizing in person though, with a lot of depth in the figure, similar to a burl without the knots.

Good one David.

I'm curious about the second blade.

The Calf Roper is a typical stockman pattern, on a serpentine frame.  So, the blades are clip main, sheepsfoot second, spey third.

Here is a Calf Roper "splayed".  Sorry for the non-wood off topic!  ;)

Maybe it's just the picture?  Here's a pic of mine folded, and it seems the same as David's to me.  Stockman patterns like these usually don't have the sheepsfoot blade sunk way down in the frame, because the nail nick needs to be accessible with the other two blades folded.

/\ Note how deep the kick is on the sheepsfoot blade to elevate it in the frame when folded.

Indeed. I've thought about filing the kick down some but it would probably cause the back spring to sink into the frame some. It has a nice flush fit now so I've left it alone.

I think GEC does a pretty good job of adjusting the kicks.  Mine could be sunk a little, but not much, and not worth misaligning the springs, as you said.

Case, on the other hand is not.  I've had to adjust the kicks on the sheepsfoot on both of my new Case stockmans.  They weren't touched at the factory, and one of them had the tip of the blade proud of the frame.

A few wood handled knives.
First is a group of all wood knives I have accumulated over the years.Have no idea who made them but they function as a folding knife should except they won't cut anything.
Second is a "penny" knife;so named because their inexpensive construction they sold for very little. They are usually a bit plainer than this one that is carved in the shape of a face and has small pieces of bone for eyes.
Third is an unmarked 3 blade knife with a cap lifter/can opener on the spine. The smaller curved blade only opens 90 degrees and is probably a grape harvesting blade.
Last is another folding knife with an unusually shaped tapered nail mark.

Thank you sir. It was one of my first custom knives that I acquired.Got it from a lawyer/client of mine for putting a custom pinstripe on his Mercedes.Came with the box, sheath, and COA. The sheath is unique in that it can be put on a belt on either right or left side and has a provision via a thong to hold it securely in the sheath but allow it to be quickly released.

The client was quite a character in his own right. He gave up his practice and bought a garage to restore vintage Bugattis which he still does. He has several of his own that he races in hill climbs up Mount Washington in New Hampshire.

Sorry I missed the WHW thread this week so if it is OK I'll post a couple now.
#1 A pair of oyster shucking knives;one with a guard which I think might be a bit counter-productive for the task.
#2 Three fish knives by different makers;one marked PAL RH-2 the others unmarked.
#3 A Marbles model 81 fish knife circa 1906. This is the largest of the three models made. Bought it for 75 cents and turned down $300 for it. Still can't believe it is worth that much.
#4 Three more fish knives:from the top;a Case Tested XX model 500;a Lamson Goodnow;and a Kinfolks.

Here is my contribution to WHW: A dagger etched with the motto "Cum Deo Et Manu" and various other figures. The handle is carved wood with inlays of what look like colored glass and the stag pommel features a carving of a lion's head(or some other big cat)on both sides. No idea where it came from or how old it is.One of the etchings looks like a heraldic shield.

My entry for WHW: A fixed blade by Erling Vangedal of Denmark. An extremely well made knife and sheath that was missing the sharpening steel for the sheath which has since been found. Anyone know anything about this company?
Here is a link to their website

It's in danish, but you might be able to translate the page.

Glad to see people are posting in WHW again. Figured I would post up a few today.
First up is an unmarked hand made piece with an unusual handle made of wood separated by a piece of colored plexiglass mounted on an angle between them.It came from Texas so the wood may be native to that area. The only marking was the initials D.D.N. carved into the sheath.
Second and third are pictures of a custom kitchen knife by J.I.Cottrell of Columbus Ohio with stabilized laminated wood handles.
Last is a James B.Lile(RIP) drop point hunter made for the outfitter Duxbak with osage orange handles.

A couple more:
First up is a custom made knife with wood handles and sheath.
Next is a Track folder by Ithaca Gun Works
Next an unmarked knife with unusually shaped blade and handle.
Last is a custom drop point hunter by George Cousino who lives about 15 miles from me. This knife was bought by my son 7 daughter as a Christmas present for me one year.

Thank you Steve. If you are referring to the last pic in my first post I swapped that for a pinstriping job on a friend of mine who was a lawyer at the time.He then quit practicing law and opened a garage restoring vintage Bugatti race cars.I have all the paper work and the original box for it.
The last pic in the second post was a gift from two of my children and means a lot to me. George Cousino makes some beautiful(and very expensive)knives and this one is a work of art.

Title: Re: Wood Handled Wednesday !

For WHW 15 May: Probably one of the worst designs Blackie Collins ever did. While he designed some of the greatest and most unique knives I have ever seen, this one is a total disaster.
Called the Benchmark Rolox,it featured a unique opening mechanism whereby the top of the blade was lifted slightly and then was pushed open by pushing on the serrated top by the thumb until it locked open. To close, the lock bar on the bottom was pressed allowing the blade to rise up and be slid closed.
Two things were bad about this design: First it was very awkward to open and second;by putting the blade release on the bottom it invited triggering the mechanism by your small finger when putting a lot of pressure on the handle such as cutting through heavy material. This usually resulted in the blade sliding rapidly backward and grabbing the skin in between your thumb and index finger(don't ask HOW I know this!).
The knife was very well made and expensive(the wood handled model was over $60 back in the 1980's and the stag even more) and I don't think many were sold.I wound up with two of them(the other has Micarta handles).Strangely the other one has the false edge ground on the opposite side from the original one and has a shield.I am posting pics of both for comparison. Anyway that is the story.

Cool knife Ray!
Thank you sir. One of the things I love about accumulating knives is the virtually endless variety of them. Just when you think you have seen every type of knife ever produced, something else comes along. When researching this particular specimen I found that they come with a wooden bowl that is specifically shaped to the knife to facilitate chopping whatever(usually vegetables).I'll  probably look for one of those even though it is unlikely I'll ever use it.

WHW for 5 June: Picked up this 80's era spring operated knife by Cumosa of Mexico that was sold by the Edge Company in Vermont. Not an expensive knife in it's day(about what I paid for it today:$12);it functions by pulling the lanyard on the rear that retracts a clip going over the blade tip and a long tension spring pulls the blade open. To retract the blade;you pull it slightly forward and then fold it closed making sure the latch goes over the blade tip.

Glad you could join in

That's an interesting handle shape

Glad to have joined, Steve!

It's a traditional portuguese/spanish design. It exists for a long time, but being hand made and in small quantities, it's not commonly known in other places.

Thanks! I just got to use it yesterday. Cutting a cantaloupe and some cheese (Queijo da Ilha, Açores) for diner.

Super sharp, took care of both without a problem.

Wood Handled Wednesday for 12 Jun 2019
Thought I would post a couple of views of this unusual carved,"penny" knife. The origins of this knife go back a LONG time and were so called because of their inexpensive construction allowed them to be sold very cheaply. Whether or not they actually cost a penny is open to discussion. Most were plain handled and rarely stamped with a maker's mark.
This particular one is stamped with what appears to be a hatchet or tomahawk and the handle is carved as that of a female being swallowed by a fish. The eyes are tiny black beads. Have no idea who made it but it is interesting.

Wood handle Wednesday is once again upon us.I may have posted these before and forgive me if I did but I am old and senile and forget things occasionally. :D
A group of cork handled fish knives from various makers.Top to bottom:
Lunawerk Italy double edged dagger(one edge serrated).
Marked simply "Japan" with a handle painted to look like a bobber.Guess that makes it easy to see when you drop it overboard.
A KA-BAR with the blade hollowed out to lighten it.
A Colonial
A Cressi Italy.

Thought I would throw a couple more into the fire just for laughs.A Rigid Apache folder and a Rigid bowie. The company was started by a couple of employees of Gerber Knives and were basically custom made in Santee California for a short period of time. The Apache folder makes a Buck 110 look like a pen knife and is massive.I carried it for awhile on my hip until it got too uncomfortable to carry.
The Bowie I got from a friend of mine who also tired of carrying it. Someone who owned it before him had attempted some engraving on the bolsters with(in my opinion anyway)less than satisfactory results. Didn't affect the function of the knife though.

WHW for 3 July: A Gerber Model 1 folding hunter. This one has a little history but I won't go into it now;too long a story.
This was Gerber's first foray into folding hunters  and the came either with or without checkering. The ambidextrous grip allowed it to be held in either the right or left hand comfortably. For some reason they didn't sell well and were dropped from the line ifn favor of a more conventionally shaped folder.
For awhile they were very popular in the Japanese market and good examples fetched all kinds of crazy prices. I don't know if that is still the case today but I feel very fortunate to own a copy of one.

2016 Buck 110 and some no-name giveaway knife Raybestos put their name on. I put it on my keys as to have a backup knife, but something I would care about if it either got lost, or I had to give it up because I forgot the place I was going to had a "No Knives" policy and metal detectors.

Figured I would see a bunch of new posts for Wood Handled Wednesday when I opened this post......where is everyone?
Anyway to start things off I'll post a couple of Camillus knives. The first is a #1 pattern pruning knife. The second is a very old(circa 1915)easy open jack with ebony handles. The knife looked a little scruffy when I found it at an antique shop in Ashtabula Ohio many years ago and that is when I realized it had never been sharpened after it left the factory. There are a couple of nicks in the blades and I was tempted to work them out;but then I thought:that will destroy the history of the knife. I wondered how it had survived this long without seeing a stone.Wee'll never know but it makes for interesting speculation.

Something a little bit different for WHW: A combination tool for opening & closing wooden cigar boxes. The blade slides under the top of the box and putting a little pressure on it raises it slightly;exposing the heads of the nails holding it down. The notch in the blade fits under the head of the nail allowing it to be pried up and removed. The raised portion of the blade is a hammer head allowing the nails to be re-installed and hammered down. There is advertising stamped on it for the C.S.Osborne Co.which I assume is a tobacco distributor.

Wood handled Wednesday 14 August: A John Ek Model 6 combat knife with it's original sheath. For those not familiar with the name he made knives for soldiers in WWII at no charge to them.He employed over 100 people during the war;most of them with disabilities. He kept records of who was the recipient of each knife by serial number and supposedly you can still find out who that person was by contacting Ek Knives. They started out in Connecticut and later moved to Florida. His son still runs the business and makes knives. The original construction is unique as the handles are held in place by pouring molten lead into a countersunk hole in the wood and then filed to finish. For a good capsule history of the company Google John Ek Knives.
According to the serial number this knife was made sometime in 1943 although I still haven't found out who the original owner was.The knife was given to me by an older gentleman for whom I had appraised a bunch of knives for him to sell.Imagine my surprise when I found out that one in the condition of mine was going for nearly a thousand dollars! I told him about it and all he said was,"Well now I know it is in good hands!" Needless to say I will never sell it.

Not the best photo, but it is my first wood handle Wednesday

It would be un-Canadian of me to Not recognize a Grohmann, even when it's closed. Nice !

This Buck 110 with the new Ebony wood scales came in the mail to day. Gave it some oil and couple passes over the hone and into the pocket it went.
Nice 110  :tu:

Nice 110  :tu:
Wood Handled Wednesday for 9/4/2019: A Blackie Collins design for Bench Mark Knives called the Rolox. Probably the worst designed knife I have ever seen which I will get to shortly for several reasons.
For those who are unfamiliar with the operation of this knife it goes as follows: To open the blade, you press down on the notched back part which elevates the point.By pushing forward on the notches the blade rides forward on rollers until it locks into the open position. To close, push down on the back lock(on the underside of the handle)which once again elevates the point of the blade.Grasping the blade, you slide it to the rear to the locked position.
And now for the design flaws. For one thing it is awkward at best to hold in one hand and operate the lock and blade with the other. The worst part however is that if you are cutting something heavy and exerting a lot of pressure on the handle the lock release falls right under your little finger which can trigger the lock and cause the blade to slide to the rear forcefully. What this usually accomplishes is to grab the skin in between your thumb and index finger rather painfully.DON'T ask how I know this!
Anyway as I am only allowed 4 pictures, the first post will show the operation of the knife and a second will show where your finger lays on the lock. Class over.

Couldn't pick just one for WHW today so I picked four:
#1 is a custom hunter by George Cousino of Onsted Michigan. This was a gift one Christmas from my oldest son and daughter.
#2 is a handle on an unmarked dagger I got many years ago from a huge militaria collection.
#3 is another unknown handmade knife bought off e-Bay from Texas.
#4 is a custom drop point hunter by the late Jimmy Lile for Duxbak.Handle is osage orange.

Thank you sir. It is kind of special to me.What I really like about it is how Lile designed the sheath;it has a belt loop on either side so it can be worn right or left handed. There is a hole at the front top of the sheath that the lanyard goes through. It holds the handle in by wrapping around the handle and then passing through the hole. The loop rides on the top of the handle and to deploy the knife you flip the lanyard off and then pull the knife out.Kind of hard to explain but it really works well.
