Cowboy hat recommendations?
on: March 15, 2026, 11:54:23 PM
My friend is getting married in Texas. I've been looking into getting a dressier wide-brimmed hat for a couple years, and figured now's the time. Any recommendations? Would be especially welcome if anyone knows a good shop in/around Austin. Not looking to pay the tourist tax and wind up with a lousy hat in the process.

I feel like you would not go wrong with a Stetson.

But I have to admit I don’t own one, as I’m more of a Tilley hat guy myself.

I'd second a Tilley, but I doubt very much that's what you are looking for.   :D

I'd strongly recommend an Australian hat called an Akubra, but again, probably not what you are looking for.

That's the extent of my help, sorry it's not of much use.

I second Nate's recommendation of the Stetson. Resistol is another option; I like this one. Of course, as a guy who views hats as useful solely for protection from cold or falling objects, I may not be the right person to ask.

I don't know your hat history so apologies if I'm insulting your intelligence.

For a wedding use a felt hat as it's more for a formal occasion.  The only time I would wear a straw hat to a wedding (and I have) is when it's in the summer AND the bride and groom incorporated camo into their wedding colors.  It wasn't my wedding and they didn't ask for my opinion so we'll leave it at that.

Stetson, Resistol, and Tony Lama are solid go-to brands.  I'd say check out Boot Barn and Cavender's Boot City for reasonably priced hats.  These two places were my goto when we lived in San Antonio, mostly for boots as I didn't wear as many hats back then.  Boot Barn used to be Sheplers (which is the one I liked more) before Boot Barn bought them out.

If you want something more expensive, you can head to these others listed below.  I've heard they're good but I've never been there myself so I can't vouch for them personally.

* La Herradura Western Wear
* Callahan's General Store
* Gomez Western Wear
* Tecovas

We live north of Austin in Liberty Hill so just holler if you need anything.

We're explicitly casual for the wedding. I think I'm leaning towards a lighter colored felt, since that'll give me the most versatility (a little cooler in the shoulder seasons).

Appreciate the recs!

Plus if you got a black one someone with a white one would have to shoot it off your head.   :ahhh

I'd wear this, but I'm a traditionalist:
