what exactly does this mean?

Just picked up a Kershaw NRG folder.  It's a beaut.  When I opened it up on the side of the blade it say
"First Production 1 of 500". 
What does that mean?  1st production run of 500 other runs?  Or is this the first knife of 500 made?  Anyone?

Yup.  There are a few soldiers kicking about ATM with similar written on it.

yeah thanks for your input guys.  kind of what I thought as well but just thought I would throw it out to the more knowledgeable. 
Be nice to have a 1983 PST with that on it huh?
