Victorinox Store Visit
on: April 16, 2009, 04:42:33 AM
I had the opportunity today, to visit the Victorinox Store at Woodbury Commons, NY. Lots of fun. It was great to actually peruse about 100 different models of Swiss Army Knives. It was almost like being in Heaven. They didn't have everything, but they did have a huge selection. I, of course, could not leave without buying a SAK, so I picked up a Swiss Champ. The Swiss Champ is my first really large 91mm SAK. Until today, my largest 91mm was a Cybertool 34. The Champ is quite impressive. I love the magnifier and file. Now I just have to make a sheath for it, as it's a bit too heavy for pocket carry for me.

One thing that I find to be odd about the Swiss Champ is the awl. When did Victorinox start rounding the tips of their awls?

The guy at the Victorinox store really liked my green canvas micarta Hunstman.

1. Get an SOS Kit sheath for it.  That is what I got for mine 10 days ago.....Felinevet has them.  Another one is the nylon sheath with the Vic logo on it (similar to Gerber tools' sheath).  Cost about $5 from SMKW.  I do not like the other Vic sheaths...they seem cheap.

2. I bought a brand new SC a few months ago..the awl is very SHARP on mine...

Same here in Seoul.......the Hyundai and Shinsage and I-Park & COEX malls sell Vic clothes, luggage mostly.  They sell a few overpriced SAK's, and limited selection.  The duty-free store sells luggage and clothes only it seems.  Before my wife goes to the States this summer, we are buying Vic luggage.

I have a vic bag and I also got a messenger style one for my girl... I have to say they are both really well made (overpriced at RRP), but a bargain from ebay etc.

Here are some pictures of the new style Victorinox awl, from my new Swiss Champ. We'll have to wait and see if this change goes across the entire 91mm product line.

In my opinion (which is worth every penny you paid for it  :D )

That is not an awl, that is a QC error.

I hope it's just a QC error, the "original" design is much better.

What's with all the negatives?  Quality control issues from Vic. are so rare that that make it collectable :D

Want to swap it for one with a good awl ;)
