Oh, I didn't know they were owned by them - that makes sense now, ta  :)
Well it only happened a couple or so years ago :)

So I take it old Wengers aren't collected that much?

Certainly most of the chatter over on SOSAK is about Victorinox not Wenger.  I'd be cautious about buying one without physically seeing it first.  Either that or from someone I trusted.

PS I read recently (but have done nothing to confirm the tale) that Wenger was bought by the Elsener family not Victorinox themselves.  Certainly Victorinox seems to have no part in the decision making process or design of Wenger products.  I suspect it was more the cash injection that allowed Wenger to get better with the QC.

I'll interject my opinion here:

I like many of the more recent Wengers.  I love the Large Mountain Bike tool, S557, and even the funky Minathor.

Then there's the awesome Business Tool.

The new Mike Horn Ranger looks like a big winner to me too.

I also like some of the older (but not old) models.  I have a Cascade which is a brilliant 3 layer knife:  Main blade, small clip point, saw, can and bottle opener.  Awl and corkscrew.  Very nice and at 84 mm, extremely compact.

Don't get me wrong Mr Whippy, I've got a Rollerblader and a Ranger 78 that are great knives with no quality issues whatsoever.  Also I now have an older Commander that is just fine, but I have had a couple older ones that were, frankly, rubbish.

No problem, Gareth.

I was just trying to give nuphoria support if she found a Wenger that she liked.  The more recent Wenger line up are very nice, inventive knives with unique tool sets and a very compact form.

I vaguely remember back in the 80's always choosing Vics over Wengers due to uninspired products and poorer fit and finish of the comparable Wengers.

I don't think that applies now.

I have no probs at getting the new ones - there's one coming from the birthday fairy I hope  :D
