considering a powerlock mod
on: April 24, 2009, 09:30:15 AM
has anyone added any material to their powerlock(or any other model's) handles to to allow them a comfortable grip while ditching the handle covers?

something to accomplish a similar effect as a gerber MPT I saw posted here;

would be nice to have a decent grip while eliminating the extra step in the tool access.(maybe SAK style scales with tweezers/toothpick/pen?!)

just tossing it out there.

I ditched the covers the day I got my SOG and never looked back.  It seems that calluses on the hands are almost a neccesity with a SOG.  They are brutish and utilitarian, with the gears and handles digging in.  I can feel it dig, but it doesn't hurt.  A custom grip would be cool, but I recommend doing some manual work with no gloves on!  I'm looking forward to what you come up with, as customizing a SOG is a lot of fun.

In other words. It's a MAN tool

IMO the shaping of the handles on the MPT makes it even more uncomfortable to hold.
I'm back!!

I understand that the specific implementation is such that they are flared out and rolled back in, which I wouldn't replicate

I just got my SOG PowerLock B-60 this week.
It's my first Multi Tool.

It's a fantastic tool that's already seen
plenty of use.  I highly recommend one.

I removed the handle covers within an hour
of taking it out of the box.

I don't miss them and don't even know where
they are now.

I've ordered a 3" straight blade to replace the
scissors.  Then I'll have the perfect tool.

I haven't modded any of my SOG's. I'm getting a PowerLock in the mail next week from a forum member and I'm going to mod it to my specifications!  :)

Good call - the MPT in your picture is more uncomfortable than the PST, I think mostly because the rolled edges have gaps between them. If you look at something like the Leatherman Pulse, or Supertool 200, the way they have rolled the edges there works very well. If you did that with the Powerlock, you'd need to take care that the tools still opened freely I guess.

Another option would be to try and attach some plastic / soft material like the Zytel inserts on the Leatherman Blast maybe? That also works well, but I think either way it would be tricky to do.

I understand the need though, I don't use any of my SOG compound leverage tools much at all, mostly because of the gears spiking your palms, although I've left the covers on mine so the pliers are comfortable enough.
I used to come here a lot.
