Swiss Tool Spirit
« on: May 18, 2009, 09:33:33 PM »
Hey there. Here´s my first tool review here - please forgive some mistakes, English is not my mother tongue.

The Swiss Tool Spirit (short: Spirit) is made by Swiss manufacturer Victorinox and the little brother of the Swiss Tool.
Smaller and lighter than the bigger brother it still is a full size tool with an amazing selection of tools.

Tool selection:

Pliers
hard and soft wire cutters
woodsaw
awl
large flathead / bottle opener / wire bender
chisel / wire strippers
serrated sheepfoot blade

scissors
small flathead
Phillips screwdriver
can opener / medium flathead
file

All tools but the pliers open from the outside of the handles. All tools open smoothly, no tool clumping at all. The polished handles make the tool look expensive. It comes with a high quality nylon or leather sheath. I´d prefer a pocket clip, but the sheath is ok.

Let´s have a closer look on the tools.

The pliers are a hybric needlenose - bluntnose style. They are strong and up to heavy duty tasks. The Spirit might be the little brother, but it still is a heavy duty tool. The wirecutters just work fine too, cutting coathanger is no problem.

The knife blade is awesome. Some might not like it for the sheepfoot blade, but I love that. It really gets sharp as hell, the serrations allow the blade to stay sharp quite long. Sharpening might be a little more complicated for the serrations, but using the Sharpmaker it´s quite easy.

The woodsaw is maybe the best on any multitool. It´s the same saw that can be found on some Victorinox SAK, and works really fine.

The file is good, but no match for the Leatherman diamond file. In fact that´s the only tool where I think LM is superior to the Spirit.

The screwdrivers work fine, the Phillips screwdriver is awesome - it works on a large number of heads, and it is positioned in the center of the tool.

The bottle opener and can opener work as intended, I use the Victorinox can openers in my kitchen too. They never failed to open a can, so I guess they are just fine.

I never used the chisel / wirestripper blade. I just find no use for it.

Last tool: The scissors. They are small, but very usefull. They even cut plastic ties without problems and are great for opening packages. I´d prefer them being larger, but they work fine just the way they they are.

Conclusio:

The Spirit is a pretty well designed tool. It really looks nice with the polished handles, but turns out to be a workhorse. I recommend it.

(Spirit pliers vs LM Skeletool)

PROS

great blade and saw
ergonomic handles
heavy duty tool
fair price

CONS

file could be better
heavy
no pocket clip

Good review. But, there are certain implements on LM tools that beat the Spirit hands down like the Philips driver or any of the drivers for that matter.

Good review ! I'm a big Spirit fan . The chisel/wirestripper tool comes in very handy . The Caplifter /large screwdriver makes an excellent light/medium duty pry tool . Despite unorthodox appearance , the butterknife and scissors work very well .

Great review!  The Spirit is my favorite tool at the moment.  I like the file - it is very aggressive and compares well to the regular file on LM.

Good review!

IMO, the cap lifter/pry bar works very well.

But I agree with Leatherman123, the LM file is MUCH better, especially the diamond coated file.  Also, the bit driver is much better than the Spirit.

I agree with Woz, lack of the a pocket clip is a killer in the whole deal.  For real work, I need the pocket clip.

Maybe I can get Jsews to do the mod on mine.  Until then, the Spirit will be a drawer queen.  Just not easy to carry.

It´s a matter of taste it seems. I prefer the Victorinox drivers for they never failed when I needed them.
