Duct Tape: What have you ACTUALLY used it for?
on: May 21, 2009, 03:29:02 AM
DuctTapeHero has inspired this thread.  What things have you used duct tape to do?  No "Well you could do...".  Only things you've actually done.

I'll start:

1.  I have switched to using duct tape instead of moleskin to prevent blisters.  Much thinner, sticks better and equally effective.

2.  I once used it to keep a split radiator hose together until I got home.  Worked great.

3.  Once made a dog leash out of it.  Worked pretty well...

4.  Black duct tape makes an excellent seat repair patch for my old Land-Rover.

I had to make a mouse-trap powered car for 8th grade science. I used duct tape to hold the trap to my brilliantly designed lego car. :D

hmm...here's a few;

-Sealing a crack on a household vacuum handle.

-Keeping antenna coax and various wires stuck to the inner frame of the car (inside the passengers side doorway) for my CB radio setup.

-Sealing the holes in the back right pocket of 90% of my jeans.  The razor knife I carry for work tends to wear a hole in that pocket.

-Holding my makeshift handle onto my old Jackson machete...gives it a good grip to!  It's the ultimate BEATER blade.

I don't use it I use gorrila tape. And I once used GT for repairing a glass door(clips broke holding glass in so i used stips of it around the glass and it held better than duct tape which kept peeling. haven't went back to duct tape since).

  • Used duct tape to hold a small fluorescent light fixture to make a light box, For photographing my SAK's of course! :sak:
  • Used "White" duct tape to repair small holes and dings in our white ceiling tile.
  • Used the same duct tape to seal crack around our front door during winter.
  • Used any duct tape as bandages. My wife spends $$ on Band Aids for herself cause she don't wanna look like a redneck I guess.
  • Used duct tape to repair some old beater tennis shoes for mowing the grass

Too many more to think of right now.

+1. I find that gorilla tape is thicker and sticks on stuff longer than DT.

I use the stuff all the time.  Normally its intended as a temporary fix but you know how that works out  :-[ :D

The switch box on my lawn mower has been attached with nothing but tape for a couple of years.

This old PSU was assembled from a couple of different ones and needed a hole blocking off.

Sometimes I even use it on ducts :D
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Duct tape will remove warts. I used it years ago on a horrible wart on the pad of my thumb. It took about 3 weeks of wearing a small piece over the wart. It worked when nothing else would.

Last night I made a small "wallet" for a small magnifying glass I wanted to EDC but was afraid it would scratch. It's in my pocket today. We'll see how it works out.

Many more, I just got to think of them.

In old trucks with a transmission hump, placing the roll on the transmission hump makes an excellent cup/mug holder.  That little bit of stickiness on the sides keeps the roll from sliding around when cornering.

My friend and i were shooting at oil rigs in the middle of the sabine river here in East Texas(Yea we are dumb rednecks :D). One of the bullets bounced back and went into my right arm and out the top.
I was leaking blood all over the skiff so it was duct tape to the rescue. I was shooting a 22 and my friend was shooting an SKS. I got a small 7.62x39 scar on my arm now. Thank goodness for FMJ

also you know in the movies how a gangster never wants to go to the hospital for a gunshot wound? Now i know why. Doc calls the cops for any knife or gunshot wound regardless.

Never managed to shoot myself (only because I don't have a gun!), but I have stuck together a few nasty cuts in the past.

Currently using it to hold the tax disk in the car.

I also used it "properly" for years on stage, keeping cables down, marking stages and holding together almost any piece of equipment that had the audacity to fall apart on us!

I love the stuff and always have at least a couple of foot wrapped around a card in my wallet to hand.

1st I wanna clarify that Gorilla tape is simply super heavy duty duct tape. It's awesome stuff but it's still under the ducktape umbrella.

2nd, some of the uses I've used it for. I used it to hold together linkage on a carburetor on a 1980 Chevy truck. It was a very temporary fix but it did get me to my mechanic friends house. That same truck also had a duck tape dashboard.

I've used it to triple the life of several pieces of clothing, from shoes to boots to wallets.

And of course my almost 35 year old BB gun.

It is a shame that there isn't a gunmetal bluing colored duct tape.  :(

LOL, that cat sadly, died near Xmas 2007 but yeah, as far as he was concerned he was God so if he had thumbs he probably would have used it w/o supervision.

I use gorilla tape because it's near impossible to remove, so sometimes thats what I want, but 9 times out of 10, I reach for a roll of Gaffers Tape

It's doing dozens of things all over the stage and backstage as I type.

Long term fixes.

Our TV was designed to have a little flap at the front, not that ours ever had one, but it did have a little hole where said flap should have clipped into place.

This was fine until little fingers decided you could get pencils into it so around eighteen months ago I took the back off, fished out over a dozen pencils and sealed the point of entry  ::)

This one is slightly embarassing, yes I drive round in a car where half of the wing mirror is entirely constructed from tape.  Some little smurfs kicked it down the road one night  >:(  I stuck a new glass in and rebuilt the surroundings from tape.  That was well over a year ago and I still haven't got round to going to the scrapyard to pull a replacement  :-[  Got through its MOT like that :D

Sadly I can't find Gorilla Tape in Australia...I e-mail the guys and they quickly responded that it was due to some shipping restrictions or something :(

Wish I could try out some Gorilla Tape :(

But yeah Duct Tape is very helpful!

Today I used it to bandage a mates cut :tu:

I wish I could find some duct tape around here... or at least that I knew what it's called like. I just got back from a Praktiker (I guess it's the closest we have to a Home Depot?) and I could find all sorts of packing and insulating tape but no such thing as duct tape or similar... :-\

Here's a couple more examples. I went around the house yesterday and took a couple of pics.

This one is pretty obvious. The screw holding the battery cover on my fully-automatic dart gun got lost so I improvised.

The 2nd one is a pic of my sweeper handle, it was always falling apart so I taped it together, not very exotic but hey, you guys like pics like this.

The last pic is simply my window air conditioner unit. I live in an older house that doesn't have central air. The little plastic "leaf" on the side that seals the window broke and instead of spending a long time fixing it "correctly" I just taped it. I'm gonna take it out of the window when it gets cooler later this year so I didn't see the need in wasting too much energy "fixing it right" as my wife would call it.  :D

I don't have a piccie of it, but my wife uses duct tape to hold on the dressings when horses get hoof abscesses.

Betadine soaked gauze, wrapped with Vetrap (stretchy bandage), sealed in place with duct tape (semi-waterproof and tough enough to go out in the field for a day.)
