Anyone ride road bike here? need some tips
on: May 25, 2009, 05:54:45 AM
So basically how do you avoid butt hurts like hell after sitting on the narrow seat for extended period of time? Well it's more of the area between butt and family jewel that contact the seat, but you know what I'm talking about.

I have a gel seat cover and it helps some, but it still happens. The routes I usually do is between 50 to 70 KM and I tend to ride full speed till my legs are numb, take a break, then repeat. Mind you I'm not even an amature, just ride for fun and some exercise on a cheap department store bike, so telling me to buy $500 worth of equiptment isn't going to help.  :P

If it's any consolation,I ride averaging 18-20 miles a day,and I have the same problem.
Road biking is what I do most, and to me,you can spend thousands of bucks on derailleurs, cranksets, pedals, etc. but none of it's worth a plugged nickel if your saddle is wrong for you. A saddle that has a channel for prostate relief is one of the best things you can do for yourself.Keep an eye on Ebay, and you can find great prices on even Selle Italia saddles.Another thing that helps me is wearing cycling shorts,I can tell a noticeable difference on the days I don't wear them. The Lycra supports and compresses the muscles of the upper leg,and there's also some extra padding built into them in the sitbones area.

Brooks do the best saddles if you ask me, and there VERY popular :)

Truth be told though you just have to wait until your body adapts to sitting in the saddle again, and that doesn't happen overnight :-\

Time to spend more time in the saddle then :pok:

Alternatively you could get a recumbent :)

I've found that those gel saddle covers do more harm than good on long rides, they're fine for a pop down to the shops sort of ride but if i ever did more than a couple of miles on them i found them horrible. YMMV :)

Padded butt cycling shorts are the way to go. When i cycled all the time i had a well worn Brooks saddle i had broke in. Did a double century on it.

+1 on the padded shorts. I don't give a monkeys uncle that it looks like you're wearing a nappy, they save you from a lot of bruising.

I have some nice Altura cycling shorts with clip in paddedshorts so they can be removed and washed separately etc. I also recommend a saddle with the hole in - works for ladies too ;) It also provides air draft to keep your jewels cool and less sweaty.

Hehe...i rode 100 miles in the hot texas sun one August at a bike tour called Hotter N Hell. Afterwards i went to take a leak and it felt like someone shoved a red hot multitool between my wee wee and my swampbutt :o.

Too much info?

It was then i went on a quest to find the perfect bicycle seat. Enter Brooks saddles.

+1

Get rid of the gel seat cover and buy a proper saddle.  Even more important the which saddle is to have the proper size bike, and have it adjusted properly to fit you.
