I wasn't active on MTO for a while due to medical issues.  Since returning I've noticed that more than a few MTO oldtimers have changed their handles.

Is there a reason for this that I'm not aware of?

On most forums it seems that people keep the same names for many years.  Makes it easier for me to associate any given post with the individual who posted it.  When reading a post, you already have some idea of that poster's history, likes and dislikes, etc.

I'm not being critical or trying to stir up trouble, I'm just curious as to why all the name changes.

Some folks, Like Grant, felt that a slightly clearer name was needed.  Others, like Mikey D, are just taking the p*** and are playing with the new feature.  ;)

Gareth pretty well got it right.  I can't speak for everyone else, but I changed my username, which I have used for many, many years (well over a decade!) on a variety of forums simply because I am meeting industry folk on a regular basis.  When they check us out, I need to be more clearly defined in case they are looking for anything specific I am doing or saying, especially if I am doing or saying it on their behalf.

So, rather than tell them to look for "Defender" I decided to make it easier for folks to reference me and I started using my real name, which is something I don't care much for in real life!  It's a heck of a handle to go through life with, but it's all mine and I might as well make use of it!

That sounds bang on.  :D

When I went away for a couple of weeks it was actually a real PITA trying to get used to all the name changes.

Personally, unless you are like Def and have a good reason to change it I'd like to see all usernames stay the same.  I certainly won't be changing mine.

I'm happy to say that the only change I made was to drop the "UK" from "Gareth UK".  I'd only started with that as it is my user name over on SOSAK.  I'd only gone with that over there as someone had already snagged plain old "Gareth".  On top of that it seemed doubly pointless as after I joined we brought in the little national flags which kinda gave away where I was from anyway.
