LONDON
on: June 22, 2009, 09:29:08 AM
In two days, I'll be in London.

Sadly, I'm leaving home my swisstool and carrying only the CT, to avoid all possible legal trouble.
I'm asking to the towners and neighbours: what's the weather like? Am I going do come home sunburnt or frozen?
And, apart the Victorinox store -and Forbidden Planet, my second pilgrimage-, what do you think I MUST see? I tried to plan a Doctor Who Trail (nerdy, am I?), but there are so few spots :/

Thank you all for suggestions :)

Given your love of the C16th have you thought about visting the Globe Theartre? http://www.shakespeares-globe.org/

Like Gareth said, the weather's expected to be fine :)

Can't say the same for the natives though (hate London with a passion!)

why's that?   is it like on tv...a bit dirty? with seedy types abound?

TV and movies portrayed NYC all wrong IMO. I got there expecting Escape from New York and was pleasantly suprised. I never came across Snake Plissken :D

Frankly its a craphole full of offensively rude people, most of whom don't even speak English >:(

The only good bit's are near the palace (obviously, as we can't have the blessed Royal's know what there countrys really like ::))

Last time I went the under my own steam, 3 blokes tried to nick my motor bike, while I was still on the bloody thing >:(

My best mate (at the time) copped a face full of buckshot that was intended for a club bouncer, and 2 months later was stabbed with a screwdriver in a kebab shop (fortunatly said mate is a VERY nasty bloke >:D)

No I hate London, and really can't see what the fuss is about, as there's not even any bloody tree's there :-\

We don't plan to enter clubs or to eat kebab, luckily.
I don't speak english too, and I've nothing agains rude people if they live on their own.
(now i need some translation about your own steam, and "to cop" :D)
we are not planning dangerous behaviour -in every big city it is the same-, and we are not exiting our third grade.
Thank  you for the head up; I hope we'll enjoy London again anyway :)

said that (thank for the slang lesson :)), we liked London the first time -three days twelve or so years ago, for me, for the "star trek in Europe" exposition at the science museum (did I mention the once upon a long ago I was a huge ST fan involved in big, or so they were seen from here, initiatives?), and last summer for my girlfriend-, and we planned this as a pre-honeymoon.
We're aware of the cons, many of them, but we'll be there for the pros, with an open mind and open eyes. I hope :)

I am on the Gimly side, sorry, except for the archery. I think aim is a genethic thing. My brother, with an inch thick glasses, could center a bullseye around the corner. he won two times the archery competition at the Gathering (or maybe one year the first place, the later the second); witha crossbow, untrainee, I'm on that kind. My father was a great hunter, stopped only when he went too near tfor his stastes to shoot a mate that was where he wasn't supposed to be. My grand-grand-pa was an... illegal hunter that could shoot a kingfisher with a .22 pistol while flying zig-zag.
except that, I'm bulky, slow, resilient and a good drinker, homebrewer and I like mead. not elvish, I think :/

Been there.
No troubles, except when I had my CT confiscated on the Eye -did they fear me hijack a panoramic wheel with that?- and in Natural History museum (all the animals were already dead, I swear!).
Had a Fantastic time (note the capital F) in the new globe theatre and around the city.
The tube is the best way of travelling, nothing to say.
thanks to the melting pot, not a really ugly man or woman in sight, except for me.
None rude, after all, no problem except someone shouting in the middle of the night under my hotel, a short fight with someone unpleased of that and a fast run at the sound of a police car, all in ten minutes. I barely woke, my GF told me that :D
-but I was in king's cross, no surprise :)

Not an A+, but a B, after all.
Now I'm waiting the credit card bill. THEN, I'll worry.

I work in London and have to agree with Mike, it's a horrible place.  I could never live there - commuting in every day is bad enough  :(

It has some very nice places and even some places with nice people - it also houses my football club and I've got a lot of good mates who live there - but the general feeling I get from people there is either of arrogance or plain nastiness. The youth  tend to be rude, ill manored and aggressive; while the older generations are rude, ill manored, arrogant and aggressive.  Even 80% of the streets are dirty, boring and awash with concrete, though if you look past the 3  billion subways, mcdonalds, Eats and other chain food stores there are still some fantastic pubs, restaurants and independent shops.  Thankfully I get to go back out to the countryside for some fresh air and greenery after work - I only head in there for football, music, or to make my money like a money grabbing capitalist whore  :D

I'd forgotten about the Natural history museum.  last time I was down I went there and had a SAK in my bag, trying to be circumspect about it.  Walking up the steps I saw that they were doing bag searches and so put it in my pocket (I didn't know if they would hold it for me or just refuse entry).  My bag was searched but I was never asked to turn out my pockets.  great security huh?  ::)

The man at the desk asked if had one -"any sharp object, any pocketknife?"-, after opening my backpack.
I answered yes, and he got it.
No problem about that -except that I was tempted to give him my calculator too :D

London security is a strange thing, I was going to see a band at brixton academy and i'd completely forgotten to take my sak off my keys.  Didnt have my bag luckily so no locking knives but they were doing the usual pat downs on the way in.  Sure enough h pats me down and blatently feels the sak in my pocket, at this point i suddenly remember how badly they look towards knives at gigs and start to worry about being thrown out and not getting into the actual gig (yes they over react that much) so when he says 'can you turn out your pockets please' i was fearing the worst.  Instead of making a fuss though i cheerfully said 'of course mate' and started to take things out when he just says 'actually dont worry, in you go' before i had even got my phone out  :D utterly bizarre but very lucky!

Glad you enjoyed yourself though mate, can't believe you went for strongbow when there are all those nice real ale and cider pubs around selling the proper stuff mind  :o

I had plenty, don't worry... but since my first Gathering, late in 1998, I am fond of strongbow :).
