Very, very cool

Hmm...if I had to use something military to get a cup of coffee at the corner store, I would love a Ferret. Now there is a classic…and it is in keeping with the locality that most of you hail from. It shouldn't scare anyone either....much.
WW2 taught the designers and soldiers a lot about the necessity of low-profile design...something the US didn't catch on to until the Abrams. If I had to go around in vintage wheeled AFV's give me a Saladin, and if it's tracked, nothing is as sports car looking as the Scimitar.IIRC,the Scimitars were originally powered by modified Jaguar engines.
The Israelis did a lot of things, big and small, to the M-60 to make it a battle worthy tank
They definitely wrang more service and combat out the Sherman, long after everybody else relegated it to scrap heaps and museums.
Quote from: I'm Still Bison on July 02, 2009, 02:14:18 AM They definitely wrang more service and combat out the Sherman, long after everybody else relegated it to scrap heaps and museums. The Sherman was fairly reliable automotively speaking, so I can see the Israelis appreciating that.So long as the Sherman wasn't forced to slug it out with other main battle tanks (such as Leopard or Tiger) I could see how it could be useful to the Israelis.German Panzer crews nicknamed the Sherman the "Tommy Cooker" or "Tommy Lighter" to show their contempt for its armor and survivability, IIRC..
IIRC,the US built something like 53,000 Shermans. The ultimate Sherman had to be Israel's Super Sherman, and it had been upgunned to such a degree that turret rings were cracking from repeated recoil. The 1973 Yom Kippur War had to have been something to see...Israeli Shermans vs, Syrian Panzer Mk IVshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M50_Super_Sherman
