What Did You Use Your Multitool For Today?
on: July 09, 2009, 10:38:36 PM
Thought I'd start an ongoing thread to see how our MT's perform in the real world. Hopefully this will aide in buying/carrying decisions. I do HVAC repair and try to carry as few regular tools as possible and suppliment with various MT's/Knifes. My last 2 usages:

Task: Cutting up old sweatshirt for rags
Tool: Leatherman Wave - Serated blade
Performance: Excellent, goes through fabric like a hot knife thru butter.
Rating for task: 9 out of 10

Task: Loosening slotted hex head drill screw holding a "c" clamp to a furnace.
Tool: Leatherman Wave - large slotted screwdriver.
Performance: Fair, screw was drilled in and a bad angle for the wave, took much longer than a 1/4" nutdriver.
Rating for task: 4 out of 10

Note: Sitting on the shelf and looking pretty is not a real world task  :D

Well let see I carry a Spirit everywhere I go and today I used it for the normal stuff like taking off hubcaps,
cutting wire, picking up objects too many things to really write down.

Actually I use it alot without even thinking about it. :D

I used the trusty Sideclip to unclog the bath tub drain. Then the tool was soaked in oil.

I used my new old model Wave to put together a LG endcap and Sony Eco endcap today at BestBuy. I had to thread an HDMI cable thru the back of them.

I used my EDC SwissTool as a hammer to persuade some parts of a large projector screen into place.

More appropriately, I used the pliers to unstick some stuck connectors and one of the blades to slit open some parts bags.

No matter how much I use or even slightly abuse the SwissTool it keeps coming back for more. :tu:

Work locker PST, to open battery compartment on a tympanic(ear :D) thermometer & change dead batteries.
Tools used medium screw driver to undo screw & small screw driver to carefully lever dead batteries out.

10 out of 10  :D :D even stayed back 2mins late to do it :o :o :D

Pretty good day out for a swisstool spirit this evening, lots of staples removed from the back of stage masking that was otherwise going to cause some cut fingers. Picked up quite a few hot things with the pliers and used the awl a lot to put in several screw eyes.

Also dismantled 2 moving lights in the morning as a work colleague got interested in how they worked and asked for a guided tour of their innards

Highlight was discovering I had the only tool able to get a screw out of an awkwardly placed hinge as the vic ratchet got its workout for the day

Spirit scores 10/10

Tool:  Skeletool

Task: Refilling the hydraulic fluid in the VW Cabrio for the pump that raises and lowers the soft top.

Performance: Excellent.

Rating: 9 of 10.  I chose to use a 13 mm socket to remove the brass fill plug.   Couldn't use the Skeletool bit driver to turn it due to space restrictions.

task: replacing door and hardware..... check proper wiring of wall outlet (no power)

tool: hitachi impact driver (battery died otherwise the best of the best.... no S....)... swiss spirit BO

performance: hitachi... 10 out of 10 for 2 years and going strong. the dead/ dying battery was my fault.
spirit... saved a trip back to the truck... 10 of 10... phillips driver grabbed and set latch screws smartly. the bonus was that the spirit could be extended to get access to the handset screws to work quickly. these are especially difficult to get at due to the shape of the knob and the angle.
the wall outlet was childs play.
note to self: charge batteries for hitachi driver... always carry the spirit... you never know when you may need it. you suck as an electrician.

spirit phillips fits 1, 2 and #3 heads in a pinch but is perfect for #2 heads. flat head (bottle opener) driver is perfect for wall outlet cover screws.
result: door and hardware came out perfect. had to call an electrician for the outlet.

Used my Fuse (won here on a give-away :tu:) to cut ropes holding the door/gate of a couple of wagons full of straw bales. Then I had to stack the bales. I also used the Phillips to open up a connection box on a small motor used for sorting rye. (Actually I had to do that twice to rewire it to get it to spin the way we wanted it to.) Also used the needle-nose to grab a hard to reach nut. I also dropped it on concrete with no ill effects. ::)

Everything worked exactly as I'd want it to.

Used my new BO Spirit this weekend to open a battery compartment in a toy, and used the awl to mark lines on wood for cutting (didn't have pencil).

Task: Removal of plastic retention pins/spacers that hold a circuit board to its mounting surface.
Tool: Wave - Needlenose plier
Performance: Excellent
Rating for task: 9 out of 10

Task: Cutting a cable tie(also known as wire tie, zip tie and 20 other names.
Tool: Wave - Scissor
Performance: Fair, have to take it slow, with several strokes(thats what she said  :o) to cut the plastic, last time I tried this, the scissor pinched my thumb pretty good, not the best tool for this job, recommend small diagonal cutters or possibly surge scissor for cutting these ties
Rating for task: 3 out of 10

Task: Bike disassembly for shipping

Tool:  Juice CS4

Performance: Good

Rating: 6 of 10

Lack of a bit driver meant having to dig up some metric Allens.  Also needed an adjustable wrench to remove the pedals.  All Phillips and standard screws were handled without scarring however, and the pliers were perfect where needed.

Well, if my trusty Vic Classic counts as a multitool (as it's been my sole EDC as of late), I used it today at Universal Studios.  I used the knife to slice up some pizza (why don't pizza cutters go all the way through the crust?), the scissors to cut some of those plastic ties they use to attach the price tags on to the stuffed animals, and the SD tip on the file to pry open a particularly stubborn tab on a can of soda (I couldn't get my finger nail under it).
