I've broken my emergency kits into three levels:
Level 1 - On body - this is the stuff I carry every day on my person. The actual items may vary, but it consists of my wallet, watch, knife/tool, flashlight, phone and bandana. When I'm not at work I add a pistol, extra magazine and tourniquet. This also includes my clothing as I dress appropriately for the weather.
Level 2 - current I use a medium sized sling bag that holds items I might need for a walk home; charging kit for my phone, extra batteries for my flashlight, small first aid kit, small trauma kit, small hygiene kit, small "fix it" kit (sewing items, duct tape), umbrella, water bottle and a multitool. I used to carry a bunch of redundant stuff, but never used them and they added extra weight. There is plenty of room to add stuff if I need to.
Level 3 - my truck. I carry a variety of hand tools, a blanket, tarp, cordage, first aid/trauma gear, and water. If I can't get away I can defend in place.
