Thanks a lot, now you've gone and upset my Meadowlark. Now I'm gonna have to carry him today, which will make my Vic Farmer mad because he thought he was gonna go out today.

Please be careful what you say, knives have feelings.

And yes, I DID get hit in the head yesterday, why do you ask?  :D

Please hold your Meadowlark up to the screen so it can read this: I'm sorry, dear little Meadowlark.  That was a horribly insensitive thing to say.  You are perfect just the way you are and you shouldn't pay attention to this kind of stuff.
Now hold your Farmer up to the screen: Give Meadowlark a break and remember you have to share.
Hope this helps. ;)
You've worked in child care haven't you :D

I swear I give that speech at least 4 times a day :D

I just called to all the stores in my area and 80% still had at least one in stock.

i should have called around i think. i stoppped by a wally world today that i thought might have one. there was no one to help at the counter and i was in a hurry. no actual knives were on display, just pictures in a case of what they are suppose to carry.
i like the looks of the native. i like the salt series and the endura also. i wish i could get one of each in every option offered but that will not happen. i started out kinda leaning towards the tenacious but not any more. shoot, i'm even starting to like the looks of the full SE models. lots of great advise.

I agree with Benner, the Salt 1 is a very nice knife, kinda regret trading mine.

No offense to Spyderco but I agree, the byrd line is ugly.
Gray

No offense Gray, because I agree.

However, I must add that in addition to the Byrd line, most of the Spyderco line is ugly - with a few exceptions like the Native.

I've owned a few Byrds and Spydies and they're hard to beat for hard working, superbly functional, durable knives.

But, most are at best homely, to my eyes.  Many are downright ugly, to my eyes.

Good luck on finding one.

Native is an awesome knife.  Great ergonomics, superbly functional, one of the best EDC knives ever IMO.

In addition, Native is actually a very attractive knife which is unusual for Spyderco.

At less than $40, the Walmart version Native was an amazing "bang for your buck" knife.

I could kick myself for not grabbing one while Walmart was still selling them.

i struck out at another wally world today but i did finally incountered an endura, a native, the spider that mike mentioned earlier that has the gold spider on the handle, and an UKPK in PE at the local HIGH end HIGH priced  ADVENTURE B&M. the native was $78.00 and i just could'nt get there. 1st impression was that it could be the best folding skinner that i have ever held. very smooth and compact too.
i really liked the UKPK but i want a lock blade. + 1 on the blade grind and feel.
the endura was somewhat larger than i want but well made and still worth considering.
the golden spider that mike suggested earlier sized close to the endura but did somehow look and feel better. this model had a dead straight edge while ok, did'nt do it for me exactly.
across the cases of knives i spotted something familiar. an SAK farmer for $25.00 with 03 on the blade....... sold american!
i'm starting to like the knife in HBlaine's avatar also. the search goes on.

yep....... nice spider.

i did another spider search and the one that catches my eye is that sexy centofante 3. the one i saw and held in the local adventure store was the centofante 4. the C4 is not for me but the C3..... now that blade is what i'm looking for. nice belly and drop point and has a close to perfect size.

after many hours of review and thought i finally settled on a delica. believe me i was back and forth over the delica and the salt 1 and at one point had both of them in the cart on several occassions.
i hope i get the one that i think ordered... a delica3. that is exactly what i want. the pic and specs indicate a D3 but the model # showed a combo D4 in spyderspeak. as long as it's a PE i'll be happy. if not i'll return it for a salt 1.
i'm still very interested in the centafonte3 and the salt saver (graysonK's avatar is so cool), though i did not want a SE blade.

it finally came today. i got excatly what i wanted in my 1st spyder. this delica is SOLID... and near perfect size for my needs. the out of the box blade is hair popping sharp. it looks like the edge is cut into the steel and you can see tiny serrations with the naked eye. i gives the feeling that it will hold that edge for quite some time to come. the angle of the edge looks much steeper than i am use to though.
though smaller than my gerber EZ OUT it is slightly heavier i think. thats OK with me b/c the weight comes from the blade itself.... very stout... built like a tank... i'm going to leave it clipped for tip up. i'm already starting to like that method though it's going to take some more getting use to.
thanks for all the great advise everyone.

It's sharpened with belt sander so you have this rough yet polished edge. I had the same problem with every PE spyderco (and other production knives) I have, the edge is way too obtuse, so I had to reprofile all of them. It's something easily fixed at factory yet nobody seems to bother.

it is a delica 4 PE blade. i would like a delica 3 but it's not a show stopper for me. personally i liked the d3 mostly b/c of the handle configuration as much as the blade which is why i seem to have a thing for those salt models.
after a little more playtime i have to comment on the metal to metal fit.... EXCELLENT! the blade locks to the spine with no over ride or play of any kind. it feels like a well made fixed blade knife. plus, i think i like the blade (tip), on the D4 better than i would like the D3. that said i think this knife will be carried daily but used rarely. this thing is more than a glorified boxcutter to me. it's definately coming on my next hunt but may be a little small for some uses.
