Rite in the Rain Notebooks
on: July 22, 2009, 11:31:41 PM
Well after yet another day of working in a torrential downpour I have decided it's about damned time to get something a little more waterproof than a regular notebook.  My notes today were almost unreadable, which causes many problems for me when I am trying to keep track of numerous products- today we had more than 1,400 cars offloaded, and it's my job to make sure they are the right ones, as well as record any damages.

So, I am wondering if anyone has any Rite in the Rain notebooks, and if so, how durable/waterproof are they?  To get an idea of how bad it is here, imagine standing in the shower, constantly making notes for several hours straight.  Would the notebook still be useful/readable after that?

Any help is appreciated.

I have them, but have not done any real testing to see how well they work.  If no one knows, I am happy to do some testing for you and maybe I could freak you out with some shower pics.  :D

They are some durable stuff :tu:

I got them a couple of days ago (a 4 x 6 notepad)

Highly recommended (But crazily overpriced where I live sadly :( I really wish I could get some more)...you can do a quick youtube search for Rite in the Rain and Roz (a memeber of MT.Org) has done some testing with it. I think her YT ID is something like roescoba.

Well I have ordered 5 of them online to test as I can't find a local source.  The shipping cost more than the books so I wanted to order a few to make it worthwhile, but didn't want to order any if they weren't much good.  I'll let you all know how I get along with them.

I got a few and they work really well.  Expensive, but I'd rather pay more and be able to read what I wrote than go home with a pile of mushy paper.

They work great when wet.  :tu:  You can't use Gel pens on them, but that's the only drawback I can find. I keep them in all of my packs and my back pocket for edc carry.

I've heard of treating paper maps with it but not writing paper.

What if I use a Fisher Space Pen?  That's what I'd planned on using, and what I almost always use at work.

I use regular high-rag surveyors notebooks.  Used them daily for years on the job in all weather with no problems.

They really do stand up well to water. I've been using them off and on for 20 something years. I once even let a page soak in a sink full of water over night and could still write on it in the morning. What I wrote on it, in pencil and using a Fisher BP, was still there too.

As far as I know, they are still using Fisher refills too. The pens are lower end Fishers too, or at least they used to be. Its been a while since I got one from them.

The on and off part is because I love fountain pens. They don't work well at all with those.

We use Rite In The Rain book for our notebooks in out Outdoor Recreation and Conservation university courses. You need them when all your labs are spent outside, no matter what the weather is, and they perform flawlessly in my opinion. Beats the alternative, which is mess notes on normal paper.

Well I got a couple at MEC while waiting for the ones I'd ordered to come in, and gave one to my boss, and while at work yesterday the weather didn't have the decency to rain.  So, I didn't get to test it in bad weather, but I am sure it won't be long before I get to!
