It would take lots of energy to push something like that through the pelvis, so either he or the post were traveling fast on impact - from the angle possibly a car crash etc.  He looks like he has facial injuries as well.

He's lucky to be alive at that point, you can lose a formidable amount of blood to pelvic injuries.  I'm not surprised they're pushing two bags of blood into him rapidly :)

I've seen some pretty grim stuff during my medical career.

One kid tried to show off with a firework - lit it and put it in his mouth.  Blew his face to shreds.  Another kid who crashed into a tree and basically folded himself in half.  Ended up paraplegic.  Seen a guy with half an arsecheek cut off by a Katana after a street fight.

On a lighter note I once treated a guy who inserted the stem and flower of a bluebell into his smurf.  When he tried to take it out the flower snapped off and he couldn't get the stem out.

You really do see all sorts.

He was very down to earth about it.  Once he'd gotten over the initial embarrassment he found it quite funny.  I've seen far worse things done in the name of sexual experimentation.

It makes a huge difference when you get cooperative patients.  A bit of local anaesthetic and some forceps (he wouldn't let me use a leatherman  >:D) and job done.

That's a shame. :( A picture of that would be a sure winner in the Gerber Crucial Photo Contest :D
