I'm sure Arcmania, Tektite do/did a drop in for the solitaire that let you still use AAAs. I never bought one though as these days you can get a host of 1xAAA LED lights for next to nothing. Some people really like their Solitaire's though so good luck with your project.
Sounds interesting Scion. But I'm betting folks will want to see some pictures and results of your testing before jumping on board.Good luck, and welcome!

If there is an LED rates for 1.5v it's probably weak, or if you try power a 3.0v it will be weak as well. Using these button batteries I join together you gain 4.5v and with 9ohm resistors built in and additional resistor, the voltage should be adequate and not overkill. I'm sure you can get AAA (1.5v) LEDs but I'm assuming they won't be as bright. I really love my solitaires, but LEDs are tge way to go. Thats why I'm starting this project, and for othe fans of the solitaire as well.
i'm game when its done... i'll wait till then since i neck carry a solitaire at work. along with a ink pen that has a nice little led in the butt of it...
