Escaper's knife
on: August 03, 2009, 03:37:53 AM
I was looking through Wikipedia, and found this entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MI9

In it, they mention something rather interesting: "Hutton also designed an escaper's knife: a strong blade, a screwdriver, three saws, a lockpick, a forcing tool and a wire cutter."

Has anyone ever seen a picture of one of these?

It has a lockbreaker(which I'm not sure how it works  ) not a pick. Its similar to a sog toolclip http://www.jaysknives.com/sog/23toolclip.jpg

Yes, although I can't find a picture right now, it's the same "form" as the SOG AmericanLockpicker posted.  The three saw blades are basically "disposable"...if you're trying to get through fencing in a hurry, you saw a few links with one blade until it gets dull, switch to the next blade, cut some more links, etc..

I belive one variation I saw had a spike impliment for puncturing tires of vehicles that may pursue you during your escape, or puncture heads' of people in your way.

I think the plier portion were heavy duty wire cutters, again for cutting barbed wire/fencing.

There is a timelife book that featured quite a few of those knives. http://www.amazon.com/Secret-War-World-Collectors-Vol/dp/0783557000

:tu:Excellent photos of stuff only a few military men 80 or over have ever seen and very few younger than that. I've read aboput these knives but have never seen a picture until now, and I'm nearly 64. Good job. Thanks.

Many months ago I opened a thread about asking if there was any newer versions of these and the thread disappeared without a trace. Does that mean they do exist but were not supposed to talk about them?

There was a server change a while back and some posts (including some of mine, that's how I noticed!) went missing, that might have been what happened.

I don't know how a tool like this would fare with what people EDC these days, but I'd definately like to see an updated version.
