OH Locksmith
on: August 08, 2009, 05:22:59 AM
 No picts until tomorrow, but:

I have successfully made a One Handed Locksmith.

Starting with a OHT and a Locksmith, the plan was to pull off the can and bottle opener layer and the 2 hand main blade layer of the locksmith and put the OH mainblade and opener layers from the Trekker.

That was the plan  :-\

As it turns out, it took a little more effort.  The locksmith fell to pieces as I tapped out the pins.  Therefore I had to hand build the entire knife.  That ended up making the process easier overall.  The original Locksmith has a liner between the saw and file half of the knife and the blade half.  If I had left that liner in, I would have had to make all new pins.  Since I was hand building the whole thing, I decided to try it without the liner, just to give a little more length to the original locksmith pins.

The assembly was a little more tricky because the liner lock loads the pins, making it harder to get in place with the file and saw layers correctly set on their backsprings. However, once it was together there were no problems in function of the knife by leaving out the liner AND it allowed me to reuse all the old pins.

The liner lock on the blade is pretty tight, but I suspect it will loosen up with use.  The cap lifter locks perfectly. Excellent snap to the knife too.

'Tis late tonight, but I'll take pics tomorrow and post them up.

Is it plausible to remove the Can Opener/Cap Lifter layer, just leaving the Blade, Saw, & File?

I think you could but you would also lose the reamer as well.  But I'm no expert.

It may mess up the liner lock.  The other side of the blade lock, kicks out to lock the caplifter/standard driver.

Wouldn't it just rest against the outer liner, to no effect?

Maybe, not sure if it would act funny when locking up the main blade.
