how "rare " is the Escort SAK?
on: August 10, 2009, 07:05:29 PM
I discovered that a SAK that was thought to be a Classic,  is an Escort.
The SAK wiki says that it's "rare."   Is it?
Thanks

Hmm. I'll be interested in hearing more about this.  I don't think it is that rare, but that is my gut based on what I've seen on ebay.  It's a little more rare without advertising, and maybe as the Wiki reports the version with the emergency blade is quite rare.

We have to remember rare in Vic land can still be quite a large number because typically they make very large runs.  However if they don't make too many runs, with their global distribution and the frequency these things seem to get lost, it seem even a regular production knive can become rare.

smartknives indicates that the version without the emergency blade is a current knife (not sure how accurate that site is though).

The version with the emergency blade is out of production.

I found a new Escort this past weekend for $9.99.

You know they may have brought back the Escort or something, it is listed as a current model on Victorinox.ch  0.6123 AND note... which side the blade opens.... this was the topic of an Earlier SOSAK thread of mine... that did not lead to a definitive answer....  I believe we have a NEW/updated Escort.

These are all called Escort II models. The difference is the regular Escort has the regular pen style blade and these have the emergency style blade. As far as rarity goes, I would not call the regular Escort "rare", but the Escort II is a hard to find model therefore could be called "rare".
If you find the right store you might find a bargain on a NIB Escort II since these tend to lay around as new old stock.

Nice Escort (or "Vintage") that has the emergency blade opening opposite the keyring.  I don't believe I had seen one of those before.

I think Victorinox had a knife with a confusing name "Vintage" and in the US they started selling them as "Escorts" because we already know that name, and then they decided they liked thta name as well in Switzerland.  The only think was the Vintage have the blade opening on the correct end opposite the keyring, and the original Escorts didn't.

Or I have it backwards and the Vintage got the opening wrong, and the US Escort did as well, but then Victorinox change the blade to pivot at the opposite end and decided to keep the name Escort.

or.... maybe I should ask them...

ps... I edited the Wiki... they are not that rare anymore; they even look like they are past medium.
