Hiking/Camping/Hunting Fixed Blade
on: August 12, 2009, 01:50:10 AM
Topic says it all.  I'm looking for a good fixed blade for all the above activities.  I have a plethora of SAKs and multitools, but there are times when I wish I had a solid, dependable, fixed blade.  I'm not looking to spend more than $50 or so.  I'm considering the Buck 119, but I'm not sure that's what I want.  I love my cold steel folder, but it's a bitch to sharpen, so I'm not worried about the super steels.

So any suggestions?

Air Force survival knife is a good all arounder. Cheap too. You won't be afraid to actually use it. There is a thread around here somewhere.............

I don't have one (yet) but a lot of people are very impressed with Kabar Becker BK-2.  It's also called the Companion I believe.  I am looking at getting one for my dad and read a bunch of great reviews over at bladeforums.  You might want to check out Youtube as well.  There's a lot of good videos that actually demonstrate some of the things you are talking about for different knives.

I know of many people who would vouch for a Fishwolf SBK, which can be found over at EDCForum for either $10 or $20, and made to order.  I'm still debating about which one I want, myself. :/

You could always get a Mora.  They take a super sharp edge and at the price you pay you won't cry if it gets lost.  lots of folks swear by them.  Shop around for a good price.

I don't know about the 119... I have a couple of them and they've never struck me as good "all around" knives.

I do like the Omni and Alpha Hunter knives from Buck though.  I use an Omni hunter as a general purpose knife when I'm out and it's always worked great.  The Omni's are the cheaper of the two, and should be well below your price point.

Another one I like from Buck is the Kalinga, but I've yet to own or use one.  I've heard they are decent though.

Moras are great knives, some of the sharpest I own.  for $50 you can probably get 3-4 different designs.  www.ragweedforge.com has a huge selection and fast shipping.

A more robust knife would be the Ka-Bar Becker line.  Any Camillus Becker knives you come across will probably be way more than $50, but the current production by Ka-Bar are around that $50 price point I think.

another vote for a Mora, especially for your first to see if it is enough or not for what you do.

can't beat the price and while they are not the prettiest blades with the toughest materials
they really are good blades that do most jobs well.

I'm a big fan of the Mora line as well. I love the scandi grinds and like you said, the price is great!  :tu:

I got an Airforce surival knife just for that purpose.  It's heavy duty and not to pricey or fancy so you aren't afraid to use it.  Mora makes good basic knives.  I have one of their wood carving knives.  Their basic thing is a no nonsense basic handle with good steel.  So they are inexpensive but work well.

Mora's have two big advantages.  First they probably have the best steel for the price.  Make sure you don't get a cheap knock off version.  Second they have a Scandinavian bevel.  That is a long flat bevel that can be sharpened easily without rounding the bevel.  If you are not great at sharpening or don't have a high end knife sharpening system this is probably the easiest design to sharpen.  Their trademark design is high quality steel with a very basic handle.

Any Mora will bne fine, and if you want something more "tacticool" you can opt for this:

http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=GB1589

I have one and it's very nice, gets a very sharp edge and it is easy to resharpen.

So I think I've made my decision.  As soon as my gift certificate for Amazon arrives, I'll be getting a Mora (Frosts Master Craftsmen Triflex Knife), based on all those great reviews, plus a Buck Kalinga, and while I'm at it a Wenger Soldier.

Hopefully I'll be placing the order tomorry

Good choices on the Frosts and Wenger. :tu:  I haven't heard of the Buck Kalinga so I will just have to wait and see what you think.

So I have in my hands the Frost and Wenger SI.  I held off on the Buck for a bit to see how I like the Frost.
The Wenger is a sweet knife.  I love how solid it feels, the backsprings are very strong, nice blade, bail, etc (you all know the deal with this classic SAK).

The Frost is by far the best deal I've ever gotten on a knife.  I paid $13 for it, how they sell a composite blade for that price I don't know.  Solid, very strong, very sharp.  The grip is very secure.  All I've done with it so far was cut up a potato, but you can really tell how well it slices.

I had never heard of a Mora before this thread, now I'm glad I asked for advice.  I was afraid when ordering that the blade would be thin and feel weak, but I was so wrong.

My only complaint is that the sheath it comes with sucks.  Cheap, chintsy plastic, ugly as sin.  Anyone have suggestions for a place to get a nice, inexpensive leather sheath?

Congrats! really good blade for a really good price :tu:

and yeah that's the biggest complaint, the sheath but what do you expect for that price!
what I did was go to a blade show or any kind of show sheath makers would be

I got a decent leather sheath (of course pre-made, not custom) for 5 bucks! but if possible
take the blade with you to check the fit ;)
