older thread but im going to throw in my 2 cents because i just went through my own research on this topic not too long ago.

buck 119 special...great knife, one of the best selling fixed blades of all time for a reason ... and cheap price
SOG seal pup elite straight edge ... i have this knife strapped to the shoulder strap of my hiking backpack, i absolutely love it
Benchmade rant bowie or drop point ... also a fantastic knife that i own, and makes a great hiking knife as well.  I carry this one and give my girlfriend the seal pup elite when we go hiking together.

all can be had for 50 dollars or less.

See if I would have found this in time, the Kershaw Hunter series is a great bunch of blades, under $50. The Antelope Hunter II, which I recently purchased, has a nice FFG, AUS8A steel, and a leather sheath. Thick spine too, so I'm not afraid to beat it in the bush.

Great snag on the Frost though, good blades those :tu:

They are lovely, at least so far. Sharpen fairly easy, which is a plus for me as a sharpening newbie, and hold that edge for a full outdoors weekend at least. A little on the short side, but 4 inches usually gets you by. :tu:

I broke in the Mora yesterday on a deer. It does a great job on cleaning them.  Great recommendation as usual folks!

LOL, I read that as "I broke my Mora yesterday on a deer". :o

I'm glad you like the knife though, really great bits of kit for the money. :)

LOL! I read it that way too! :P

if you do manage to break it (I've only heard of that happening once or twice in years, on many blade forums)
or if you lose it, your out 13 bucks! no biggie. just make sure to get a few next time  ;)

they are so easy to get really sharp! how about some skinning tips?

All these knives mentioned are crap. When I hike I wear a trenchcoat with a dozen kitchen knives from the dollar tree
