Mystery Vic
on: August 12, 2009, 06:30:57 PM
So I posted this already in a different tread, but I have a SAK, which I know for sure is a Vic, and am pretty certain thanks to the guys it is a Bantam. But it is old, and has only the 2 tools, no tweezers or toothpick. The shield isn't the same as the standard Vic one either, so I was just curious what it is for sure, and how old it might be. I found it in the back of my parents cutlery drawer and laid claim to it. :D

<Cough> :D ;)

Quote from: Gareth
OK that's an older economy Bantam.  From somewhere between 1986 and 1994 as an educated guess.  The older 'eco' scales were still Cellidor but didn't have the T&T and had the embossed shield.

Here's the logic if it helps.  The combo tool first came into use in 1982 but had a recognisably different tip to it.  The older tip style is still shown in the 1985 catalogue, also in 1986 we know the the combo tool was introduced in the 91mm range of knives.  So 1986 seems like a safe bet and certainly it can't be older.  It also can't be later than 1994 at this was when they changed over to using Nylon scales for the 'eco' range. As i said above the scales you have are the older equivalent of the 'eco', as defined by the fact they don't have T&T, and have an embossed shield (of a slightly different design) rather than an inlaid one.  Quite a few folks (myself included) really like them.

That's as much as I can tell you. :D

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't doubting you. Just seeing if anyone in the group could give me info like that. Thanks!

No offence taken I assure you. :)  I realised that my estimate might have sounded a bit casual so it was nice to be able to expand on it and the logic behind it.

Don't worry about the "umbrella" it's supposed to be a crossbow but so many folks saw it the same way you did they dropped it a couple of years back.

i just googled it, too and i learned that vic actually sells ... umbrellas
http://www.nextag.com/Victorinox-Automatic-Umbrella-582015164/prices-html
they must've thought if so many folks mistake our crossbow for umbrellas we might as well actually sell them.
after all, they're still foldable.
 :D

maybe its a good example of cross marketing - they advertise their umbrellas on the knives, maybe they print saks on their umbrellas ... :D
