modded SAK for whittling
on: August 26, 2009, 06:37:38 AM
anyone have a SAK they use for whittling and have you modded it for the job?

I started whittling a little bit and noticed that modified SAK's are one of the most popular knives for the job, most change the small blade to a straight rather than curved edge and some change the can opener for carving by removing leverage tip, and sharpen the flathead for a chistle

I made a mod which I called a Carver for the purpose of whittling. I think it's somewhere in the modding thread... it was a couple of months ago I think

Those last ones were a little shiny  :pok: don't push it  :police:

I have no whittling SAKs as the best I can manage is a tent peg :)  I have a few SAKs that I class as woods SAKs but there mainly for dealing with sticks my boys collect  ::) :)

anyone have a SAK they use for whittling and have you modded it for the job?

the best SAK i have found for whitling in a regular recruit. the 1st thing i do is cut the key ring/ lanyard thing off. it needs to go because it make holding the knife more uncomfortable. then i totally change the small blade edge from a curve to a straight edge and lay the edge down or make the edge more acute. i leave the main blade close to a factory angle. it only takes about 1/2 or so.
the small blade does most of the work and makes nice slices. the main blade can do the heavier work and makes curls better b/c the edge has a steeper angle. i did not learn this on my own. i am simply regurgitating Chris Lubkemann's 2nd addition "Whittling twigs and branches". in his illistration is with a tinker but i like the recruit. a great book if you can find it.
i've got some birch triggs in the fridge now waiting for the perfect day.  :D

Here's my take on the subject.  It started life as a Hiker, I removed the opener layer (and so also the split-ring), flattened out the edge and made a very acute angle on the small blade.  I liked the idea of having the saw there so as I could gather the wood with it as well.

That said I'm still not any good at whittling.  ::)

PS I just looked at the pic again and I've since done more on the small blade.

I think/hope it's his fingers  :o

Lovely mods... I like taking the opening layer out too as it's mostly redundant in these things.

How does one go about getting lovely mosaic pins in a SAK scale then? They look
