Quick question on phillip/pliers layer thickness
on: September 14, 2009, 04:24:17 AM
How do the thickness of these two layers compare? I'm trying to decide if an explorer would be a good EDC size, have a deluxe tinker with pliers layer so trying to get a feel for thickness for explorer.

Comparing my Champion to my Deluxe Tinker, the screwdriver mag layer is about the thickness of a liner thinner than the pliers layer.

Thanks, looks like explorer is a no go, too thick for comfortable pocket carry.

Strangely enough, I just bought a Explorer. If you want, I can take some pictures of it compared to my Champion and Deluxe Tinker when it get here.

Were you interested in the Explorer for the phillips or magnifier?

I used to carry an Explorer. I initially bought it for the phillips, but became so used to using the can opener/phillips instead that I decided I didn't need it anymore.

Ironically, I wound up missing the magnifier instead, so I carry a separate magnifier on my keychain now.

Where I was eventually leading to with all this was that you want to consider a SuperTinker with a separate magnifier instead.  :P

The knife is actually for my Grandfather. I bought it for the mag. I am doing a complicated scale swap to get the right colors to send to Tinnie for engraving.

Hmmm, I'll have to update the wiki physical specs for the deluxe models, but can't do it until later.  If you're thinking the Deluxe Tinker though is too thick, then I'm afraid you mighthave to look for something else.

OK i measure a Deluxe Tinker at 21.9mm and 125g, an Explorer in the past at 20.7mm (non plus scales) and 101g.  So you're looking at just a little more width, but substantial weight increase unless my sample is particularly heavy due to its age.  If I can locate another quickly I'll compare that.

Update: Checked my inventory list (not very up-to-date) and I only have the one Deluxe Tinker.  I think the weight decrease would make the Explorer quite a bit better in the EDC department, even if the width reduction is minimal.

Thanks for measuring them. It's the width that limit my carry in summer, in winter with a jacket it's not and I can carry a champ. Looks like I'll stick with climber or smaller for summer.
