SAK for whittling?
on: April 07, 2023, 10:43:15 AM
Anyone got any suggestions for the best SAK for whittling? Just had a week away and was messing around with my Farmer and some driftwood,
but wondered if there was something even more suitable?

I’m by no means an expert but I use a hiker. I find the back tool philips more comfortable in the hand than a corkscrew model and you get the small blade which is useful for some jobs

I prefer the recruit since it has no backside tools and the width with the cellidor scales is enough to get a comfortable grip.

Chris Lubkemann’ The Little Book of Whittling also recommends a SAK (I think he suggests a tinker, iirc) and shows how he modifies the blades to be better suited.
If the trees blew down the wind and no one was around, would the alphabet song really go backwards?

+1 for the recruit. Also any of the Alox knifes for the same reason, I've had decent luck with a Cadet and an Electrician. Nice to have the sheepsfoot there too.

I like whittling with green wood, so a saw is important to me.

I reckon the Farmer is a good option.

I have a Huntsman and Huntsman Light (my own mod, replacing the small blade with a Combo-opener and removing the opener layer). I also always have a traditional three blade Whittler with me (clip, pen and coping blades).

If I didn't already have the Huntsmen, I would probably go for a Camper (three layers, saw and two blades) or Walker (two layers, saw, blade, no back tools).

It comes down to personal preference, and you’ve gotten some good advice already.  Comfort in use is one of the primary considerations; some prefer:

- backside Phillips over corkscrew, or no backside tools at all

- no key ring attachment

- 84, 91, or 93 mm

- two or three layers

It’s also worth considering what tools you want.  Main blade is sort of a given, but do you also want a small blade, saw, and or awl?

This reminded me one of the reasons I prefer the recruit is that the lettering is still on the liner and not a back spring like the 91mm. This makes it much easier to remove for comfort.

I have to say I found the awl amazingly capable.

I have modified a Recruit and a Hiker. It's really going to come down to preference of size. The Hiker fills my hand better but it is no more capable than the Recruit
