Is the PST relevant today?
on: October 04, 2009, 08:59:06 AM
I thought I'd share my thoughts on a PST that I received recently. It's a late model produced in November 2002, and probably less collectable than earlier versions. What interests me though is it's relevance as a user to me in 2009 given that it is a retired tool. So here are my thoughts.

I've always liked the basic form of this tool. It's lightweight and compact while still feeling nigh on indestructible, so we have a tool that is easy to carry and feels like it's capable of taking a bit of abuse.

I really like the tool selection on this one too, and the icing on the cake is the non locking knife blade which makes me happy as a UK citizen.

Leatherman subtly changed the design of this tool over the years and all credit to Mr. Tim, these changes in my opinion are all well thought out.

Most important to me are the hard wire notch in the plier jaws

And the outward opening offset drivers. Now we have drivers that are much less prone to folding up in use. A huge plus point and a perfect illustration of thoughtful evolution.

In conclusion I'm really pleased with this late model PST. It's a tool I'll be happy to carry in the UK and the subtle refinements over earlier versions guarantee it's relevance as a worthy user in 2009, even though the model is long retired. Mr.Tim Leatherman I thank you  :salute: :D

ps. Edit. I meant to say that the Vic Huntsman pairs up prefectly with the PST, adding a saw and scissors to the mix.

Good thoughts. I carry my PST from time to time. It packs allot of tools in a small package. I can see how that non-locking blade is a big plus to you.

I'm still a fan of the PST though I must admit my SideClip gets more use even though size wise there is very little in it.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

The Sideclip is great too, but lacks for me, an important implement  :)

Nice review Chris  :tu: :tu:.

There is something just right on the tactile front with a PST. So compact & smooth. It just feels comfortable in hand . :D

Yes, I still like the PST even though it has been retired from the Leatherman lineup for some time now.

Lucky for us, they are easily found, as they made them for so many years. It is a true testament that people are still using them even though there are more modern tools out there.
A little Leatherman information.

Nice review and pics!

The PST was my main tool until last fall when my wife surprised me with a Skeletool.  I have a lot of other MTs in the drawer which just never measured up to the PST.  For 15 years it was the EDC champion for me.  In my case, the Skeletool's locking OHO blade gave it the advantage, despite not having a file.

Well I'm going to go against the flow here and say that I'm not a particular fan of the PST.  It's the uncomfortable grip that is the deal breaker for me, I just never got used to it.  I will add thought that I have a PST in my car so it can't be all bad.

It still surprises me that there is no direct equivalent in the modern Leatherman line-up.

PS I should have also said; cheers for the thoughts and pics mate.

I think the PST is a classic.

On the practical side, it works and works well and has the added bonus of being UK legal, unlike most modern multis.

On the interest side, the PST carries a fantastic story, from the necessity that became the mother of invention, through the determination to bring it to market and then an evolution over 21 years before retirement. I've seen Hollywood films with far thinner plots  :P

It's still relevant on several different levels IMO.

Good topic Chris :tu:

I used to come here a lot.

Wow, you must have spent over $20 on that PST. I just don't see spending over $6.99 on any single tool, especially on my budget. I wish I didn't even have to spend that much.  ::)

No, no, no.  You have it all incorrect!  Paying RRP is typically 2x+50 USD of the standard US price.  :P  ::)

I love my Pst's.  I have a couple, one black oxide, the other stainless.  I'm all for light tools.  They do every job
just as well as my bigger, fancier tools which I don't see as much carry because of their weight and heft.
I also agree with Dave and I enjoy carrying around the Pst's along with a little story to tell from time to time
when I drag it out for a job and someone asks about it.  :)

Good review, Chris :tu:

I agree it is a great partner for a Huntsman :) Also, the PST II is a good match for a Farmer.
Prone to daydreaming.
