You have to be REALLY scared of the dark to drop $500 on a light!

I'm scared of what my wife will do if she found out I paid $500 for a new flashlight!

Hell, my last two cars cost me less than that!

suppose the real question is what makes this light so special that its worth $500? If the answer is just that is throws out more light, then I think only a nutter would buy it. Beyond a certain amount of light, I don't understand why anyone would spend more money on a flashlight, merely for its lumen output. I mean its not like the torch is going to melt down walls, although if it did, then it might be worth $500.

If the argument is that its a powerful torch but very small, then I think that gets a bit silly aswell beyond a threshold. How small do you want it? Beyond a reasonably small size, what purpose will the torch serve by being any smaller?

So why is this torch worth $500? I suppose the silliest answer would be if its 'fashionable' i.e. made by a certain company, and people are paying for the brand name rather than its properties, that would have to be the silliest reason of all.

Sorry for the little rant, way overpriced things make me angry sometimes. But of course, it is possible the $500 price tag is justified, so before going any further we must return to why the torch costs as much as it does.

There is a tritium vial in the piston for easy flashlight location in the dark

Tritium (whatever that is) is probably expensive...and it looks like a handmade one of a kind peice, so I'm guessing it's more of a collectable thing...AND I'm assuming the body is titanium (I sat 'Ti' in it's name)

If you've got it, spend it is a lot of people's mottos :-\

More like if you've got it, waste it.

I suppose its all relative, there isnt really a threshold price for wasting money, its more to do with spedning money on something you don'tm need. But then I suppose most of what we buy is a waste of money, but I think what is a real waste of money is spending a disproportionate amount of money on something in regards to its function.

I have no issues with anyone buying a light at that price... but I can guarantee you that it won't be MY money paying for it!

Largely because I don't have that kind of money!

I see it on CPF all the time.  McLux are highly-regarded, handmade lights.  Collectors only apply on the Ti version.

I wouldn't spend that much either, but I would buy that $500 light before I would buy any $500 knife.

I'm the other way around... but then I probably wouldn't buy a $500 knife either.

Well, except maybe that giant Wenger, but that's more than a knife!

Of course if I had $500 to blow, I'd probably spend it on a new monitor or a new Pocket PC, some SAKs, new tires for my Sunfire... the usual.  There's never any shortage of things to spend money on!

Yep, I'd much more likely spend my $500 on those types of things too.

I feel that the engineering that was put into that particular light is worth much more than the engineering in any knife.  Granted, the engineering effort behind all the tools in the Giant Wenger is very high, but to me it's worthless since it can't be used.

But, I suppose that's beside the point....

When we start debating various $500 goodies, my old rule of "When in doubt, buy both" no longer applies.   :(

My last two cars were a 1981 Pontiac Catalina and a 1989 GMC Tracker.  The Catalina cost me $250 and teh Tracker cost me $400.  $500 for a pocket flashlight seems a little excessive to me!   >:D

I think if I spent that kind of money for a light, my next $500 would be going to a divorce lawyer! The love of my life is VERY understanding...... but that would be pushing her buttons waaay too hard!
