My Gareth-like item
on: October 14, 2009, 06:50:42 PM
No, I don't mean I have something that looks like Gareth, but I did a trade for this recently and as Gareth is a bit of an axe fan, I thought it would be right up his street...

The head is marked with what looks like "Douglas Axe MFG Co. Cast Steel Warrented. Manufactured by W. Hunt" which I haven't had chance to look up yet.  Anyone know anything about that company?  It is pretty big, the cutting edge is about 30cms.

Thought it would make a nice little project for me to do.
I'm back!!

Spooky! :ahhh

An excellent looking axe Ben.  What I think is a "broad axe" for shaping wooden beams and planks etc.  I'm more than willing to be told I'm wrong though (just so long as someone has a better answer  :D).

Dull, dull, dull ... I believe they were designed for lopping off limbs on pirate ships, swifter than a saw when doing the amputations during initiation ceremonies.  I believe the staining on Ben's is caused from a mix of blood and the tar applied to the stumps  :tu:

See, a better answer :D
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

That is a bit more fun.  :D

After a bit more googleage, it seems it could be older than I expected.

UK guys, any good links to decent handle and wedge stockists?  Would eventually like a sheath too.

I'd like that info too; preferably good and cheap  as I begrudge paying more for the handles than I paid for the heads :)

I did pick up a new handle from a carboot a couple of weekends ago but its about 5cm shorter than I want.

I seriously doubt you'll find anything cheap (and it's a false economy when the wood breaks and you bury the head through part of your anatomy) :-\

I'd email the Wetterling and GB importers, and see what they have to say :)

Would that be "quite a bit" in English measure or American?
