Choosing a Surefire
on: August 24, 2007, 05:54:02 PM
After using two Mag Lites camping, I want to see what a Surefire can do.  The Mags worked fine, especially the 3 AA Mag 'official' LED...it throws great, and has a nice wide spread.  The other I used was a 2AA Mag with the Nite Ize LED drop in which was great for around the camp when it wasn't totally dark (that's when I carried the 3AA).

Now I'd like to use a Surefire, and here's what I'm looking for:

-LED
-Long runtime (very important...I don't want to be changing batteries once a week)
-Two modes, low and high light
-Somewhat customizable...I noticed some can have the bezel replaced with a "tactical" one..and some can be upgraded further.
-Recessed clicky tailcap (so it can stand like a candle)
-And the kicker...under about $60 :-X (if that's possible...I'll probably look for a used light)

SUREFIRE FLASHLIGHT COMPARISON -
SPECIFICATIONS CHART

-LED - Models: L1 - L2 - A2 - U2
-Long runtime: L1 16hrs - L2 18 hrs - A2 20 hrs - U2 40+ hrs
-Two modes, low and high light: L1 - L2 - A2 - U2
-Somewhat customizable - none of the LED's offer tactical accessories
-Recessed clicky tailcap - None of the LED's will accept a recessed tailcap
-And the kicker...under about $60 - used maybe at a flea market or garage sale

USED PRICES = L1 $90 - L2 $120 - A2 $125 - U2 $220

Buy a discounted new SF by going to Candle Power Forum and joining - then go to " Dealers Corner " and look for discounts ( 20% max on SF's). CPF also has classified listings of individuals selling flashlights, I have bought 5 used SF's at good prices off the classifieds.
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

Thanks for the breakdown...the L1 looks like a good contender for me.

Are any of their regular bulbed lights upgradeable to LED?

I don't think I'll ever use an incandescent light since I've owned LEDs.

Initial reports of the new LED G2 have been favorable.  You can check out SgtMike's review over at EDC forums.  I think I found an early Christmas gift for myself.

Don't count out incans yet, if your only previous incan experience has been Maglites, that's not the best example of a good incan, the Mag is mediocre at best

try an incan G2, as they're a nice, inexpensive light that puts out a high-quality beam, incans are still unmatched when it comes to accurate color rendition outdoors

If you're going to mainly be using it inside buildings, LED lights are fine, and in fact, are preferred over incan, but if you're outdoors, nothing performs like an incan, it renders colors more realistically, and cuts through fog and rain like nobody's business, LED light has a large blue spike and tends to scatter when used in fog or rain, unless you have an LED light that's focused for throw

outdoors, LED lights tend to "flatten out" the subject they're shined on, due to the large blue spectral spike and deficient red frequencies, things look "ghostly" and unnatural under LED illumination outside

here are some pics that give a good baseline for color rendering comparison

Baseline flash exposure;

Lumileds LuxeonIII (SureFire L1 with F04 Beamshaper);

Cree XR-E (Lighthound Cree drop-in lamp module in SureFire 6P)

Seoul Semiconductor P4 (SureFire KL1 modded with reflector)

Lumileds Luxeon Rebel80 (Fenix L2T 2.0)

Incandescent (SureFire A2 Aviator)

I am thinking about getting one of those E2 defenders.  Anyone have any thoughts on these?

the E2D is a good light, it puts out approx. 60 lumens, bear in mind, SureFire rates their light output as a "worst case" scenario output and measures the light actually coming out of the light, not at the emitter/bulb, the *real* output numbers of an Executive series is actually around 75+ lumens or so

the Strike Bezel tends to chew up pockets, so you may want to holster-carry this one
