Maybe you could do the long drive for awhile, until something even better came along? :)

An hour and a half drive isn't that unreasonable.  I know it's not optimum, especially if the weather is bad, but it also allows you time to differentiate the time you spend at work with the time you spend at home.  By the time you get home you will be an hour and a half past anything that may have happened at work, and make it easier to leave things at the office.  You'll find that while you may be "losing" three hours a day in travel time, you are gaining an immeasurable amount of sanity.

I can vouch for that. My job involves sometime 5 or 6 hours driving per day (today it was nearly 6.5 hours as there was an accident on the motorway), and that time is essential for me to unwind and not be a complete misery guts by the time I get home to the family.

1.5 hours each way will quickly become no big deal ecfiffer - it's not as horrible as you might think.
