Slow Connections Need Not Apply
on: December 16, 2011, 11:54:57 PM
I've been fidding with my new light tent and here are some of the results.  As you can see, I need to spend a lot more time playing before I get the hang of it!

Sadly, these are some of the best results I've had so far!

not bad so far mate. just keep it up and they will get better.  :tu:

i recommend getting a can of compressed air to blast the surface your taking pictures of. just to keep your pics dust free.

Yeah, I was thinking a lint brush, and I should probably iron out those creases too!  :D

That's a Smith & Wesson Military and Police pen.  It's not my favorite, but it gets the job done.  I have a spare CRKT pan I should take out and use sometime, but really I use my Fisher Bullet for pretty well everything.  The S&W is my "desk pen" usually reserved for filling out Customs slips.

I reckon your doing all right :tu: I've been playing with an overhead light set up and plain white background, quite pleased with the results so far but I'm using an old camera phone as I don't have a proper camera :( I've tried taking pics with the flash on and off and had a play with the macro.

So far, so good Def. Try using a sheet or two of white glossy photopaper for backdrop.
A little Leatherman information.

The lighting is a bit moot at this point- the whole reason I got this portable light tent was for SHOT, in hopes of evening out some of the light on the new tools.  This is similar to the tent I have, although I don't have these lights:

I've never been happy with the lighting at the shows and we've taken lots of pics to get the few decent ones we usually post.  Hopefully we'll be able to get some better shots this year.  Of course, it could also end up not being bright enough at the show to use the tent at all... :(

Here's a few more pics I took earlier this evening for a sale thread, using a sheet of paper as a backdrop.

Thanks- the tent I got came with four backgrounds- red, white, blue and black.  I need to spend more time experimenting.

As I said though, this is mostly for SHOT, and I'm not sure how well the lighting at the show is likely to work with the tent.  I would love to be able to find some inexpensive, lightweight battery powered light panels to make a truly lightweight setup.

You can probably make something that works perfect for that situation by getting some bare LED and driver from dealextreme and solder them onto an aluminum bar.

Or a couple of cheap flashlights and remove the reflectors.

I thought about that but I'm not terribly good when it comes to wiring- even simple wiring!  When I was younger I got a motorized model car and all I had to do when building it was to bend a couple of small metal contacts over the edges of a battery tray and connect them to the wires that lead to the motor.  One of teh contacts broke and after "fixing" it, I tested it out.  I installed the two AA batteries and didn't even turn it on before smoke came out of it!   :ahhh

Damn sight better than my pics! I agree about blowing off the fluff though... households like ours with lose bits of hairy mammals in always seen to get in the photos!
