black oxide finish question
on: September 17, 2013, 06:50:35 AM
I have a BO PST and a new to me BO Supertool and they couldn't be more different.  my BO ST has a very slick shiny finish that I initially thought was DLC vs black oxide.  I was expecting the chalky/matte finish and was surprised to get such a slick/shiny finish.  was there a different coating for the Supertool?  can black oxide be as shiny AND slick as I describe?
all of the LM BO tools ive seen here so far have been matte and have that chalky look.  also the first picture shows a piece that has "chipped", I didn't think BO "chips"?  any thoughts would be great.  not a lot of info on BO ST that I can find.
sorry for the pictures

It's a fake...send it to me for proper disposal
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

I think the BO will kinda shine up a little with use. My Surge seems to be shining up a tad as I use, clean and oil it. Seems to be the same with my LOHT.

And, in addition to what ducttapetech said, BO will look a little different depending on teh surface you apply it on.- The ST has a duller surface to bedfin with tahn an old PST, so teh BO will look smoother and shinier on the polished Metal than it does on teh ST 300.
(BO Swisstools are shiny, too)

I have a BO Mr Pinchy that is well worn and shiny and slick. in the pictures I thought the ST was oiled but when it arrived I thought wow this is cool looking but wait why so shiny as BO should be matte.  never in doubt it is the real deal Dr Gonzo but if there was the slightest hint i'd dispatch it your way for proper disposal  ;)

the "chip" at the top also threw me off a bit.  I am real happy with this version of the ST and being my 3rd BO tool my inexperience lead me to believe it was some other coating and I had a very rare bird ( one can wish right? ).  thank your so much for your input and response  :salute:

I bet what I have is a DLC coated ST?  I was not like any BO I had ever seen.  I have to find that tool and post more pics.

BO in my experience doesn't chip.  If LM made DLC PSTs I'd image they also fooled around with other DLC tools?

I'll find it and repost pics.

I have a shiny PST as does Poncho and Legend. There was some discussion in the PST thread. I don't believe it's a DLT coating .

What brought this back up after all these years ?

Legend and the PST chronology thread  ;).   One can hope it was some rare finish Tim wanted to try out and it got loose in the wild.

I never took much time to read about BO.  In reading this article I am more convinced the coating on my tool isn't BO.

Maybe your shiny black tools are finished differently but this is a great article on BO so maybe they aren't BO?

From the article.
The finish will not chip, peel, flake, or rub off:Black oxide can only be removed by mechanically or chemically removing the finish itself.

My tool is clearly chipped.  It has other characteristics that would not make it BO.

We need some good pics  :pok:

I suppose it's possible that it is some different type of coating.   :dunno:

Swisstool's have a shiny BO finish

"Dark black color:(No patina or rainbow effect) The surface of the part may be shiny or matte depending on the surface of the part and the after finish applied. For example, a polished surface will retain its luster after black oxidizing."

What Steve said  :salute:

Also, does it look similar to a BO Swisstool ?

Edit:
Adding a few pics of a matt BO PST vs BO Swisstool vs PST which has BO applied on regular polished surface

I’ll need to find it

The rainbow and chip are what got me.  I do have a Swiss tool that is BO.

One can hope it’s a finish they were fooling around with and it got free from the factory.

I did work in a machine shop where part were sent out for BO so I’m somewhat familiar with the coating.

I honestly could be way off but the PST thread made me think of it.

Thanks for the responses.
