PST EDC
on: November 15, 2009, 03:31:34 PM
Since finishing my job for the Broads Authority for this year and starting a new temp job I thought it best not to go walking around with a large locking multitool on my belt so I dug out one of my old PSTs . I must say I'm getting on great with it  :tu: I don't have that worry at the back of my mind that I may have to justify a locking blade and the PST is a very capable multitool even if its a little dated but then again I'd rather a PST then a Kick .I'm not done with Swisstools and Waves though as they still have their place but its nice to EDC a small simple multitool .

I was looking at my old PST again just the other night and, other than the painful grip (which has always been my gripe), I was reminded just what a good tool it is. :tu:

Forget the Fuse, Blast, Kick, Skeletool, Supertool 300 etc what I want to see is a PST200 (or whatever): same tool line-up, no locks needed, just put some rolled edges on it and it's good to go. Now that's a multi I could happily carry. :)

I was just about to ask why you'd pick a PST over a Kick, since they're about the same size but the Kick has rounded handles.  Then I looked at my PST and Kick (and Sideclip), and PST just has more tools.  The Kick lacks at least three tools (screwdriver, punch, and file) that the PST has.  What's really wild is the PST is smaller than the Kick.

I can definitely see why you'd want a new PST.

In defence of the Kick it does have the scissors that the PST lacked but I'd rather have the file on a multi myself.  Add to the fact (as you say) it doesn't have the small screwdriver and is bigger than the PST I'm just not that excited by the Kick.  I still might have to pick one up anyway as it's at least UK EDC legal. :)

Plus I also think it's a shame that they don't make the tool that started it all, or at least a direct modern equivalent. :-\

BTW I now need to go dig out my PST for carry tomorrow. ::) :D

I carry a PST or PST II often, because I can :)

Each and every time, I wonder why I need all those other options - it's still a perfectly good tool, and as Dunc says UK Legal which means I don't have to be as careful as with my Charge.
I used to come here a lot.

the kick has two flatheads and a Phillips., but does lack the mini scredriver, awl, and file.

Some call that progress::)

But in defense of Leatherman, the price point on the kick is fantastic. At $20, it's more than worth it, a great tool for light use, and the non-locking tools make it legal for the blokes across the water.  ;). I' a swisstool fan, but I'd drop $20 on a kick for grins and giggles as a beater tool.

If I didn't have my Knifeless Fuse, I expect the PST would see a lot of carry time. Especially as mine now has a pocket clip.

OK the Kick has nothing going for it at all then. ;)

If I'm at home, I might grab a Kick every now and then when I need some pliers, but if I'm looking to pocket a tool, I take the PST / PST II before that.

The Kick is a lot more comfortable if you're cutting wire or brass pin stock, and the pliers are a lot tougher than the oldies, but that's about it really.

This is why I am just waiting for the PST III. It's only a matter of time before Leatherman returns to something in that form factor with that much functionality. just modernized. Nothing in the current line up really fills the gap left by the PST.
Fan of the Leatherman mini-bit driver and the Vic backspring philips.

I love my PST II. It served me well! But for me, it had its time.
With comfortable handles, bigger plier head and longer philips screwdriver,
I'd go for the Kick.

This thread has given me the perfect gift idea.  My best friend loses things constantly so I'm always hesitant to get him something extremely nice for Christmas, but I think I can pickup a used PST for around 10 bucks shipped on ebay.  Perfect.  If he keeps it for 10 years it'll serve him well, if he drops it off a Dock on 12/26 it won't be a lot of wasted money!

Yay!

Here's my PST next to the closest matched SAK I have (a mod).  The big advantages of the PST are the Phillips driver (for its location if nothing else) and the far superior pliers.
