I like neat’s-foot oil. Sometimes, I will use saddle soap.

<---Thinks axe sheaths needs some decorative tooling.

Chako, My axe is not posh enough for tooling :(

Looking around the house I have either...

Baby oil
Barbour coat waterproofing (a bit like vaseline)
Vaseline (for car battery terminals honest)
wonder where I can get some saddle soap? (local S&M shop?)

Where about are you mate?  You might have a horse tack shop somewhere nearby.  Saddle soap certainly is good stuff, but I'm not sure it's going to be worth to much time and effort just for one axe cover.  I'm sure you could find it on ebay, Amazon or other on-line shops.

BTW I'll just add that even Ray Mears just uses boot polish on his axe covers so I don't think you can go to far wrong. :D

Inspired by this thread, I finally made a cover for my hatchet. It was made from scrape from strop so the strap had to be made from nylon, the whole thing is waxed so it's waterproof and maintenance free. Still have some scraps, so going to make one for fiskars next.

Thanks, the strap ended up 0.5CM too long so it's a bit loose, oh well live and learn.

Never knew how abrasive leather is too, used my opinel to shape it and it was dulled within minutes.
