Ouch  :o

OK, my time on the board has been somewhat limited recently (boring IRL stuff) so I've not been able to view all threads.  I avoid the political threads, as I don't feel they should be here, but this sounds more serious. Can anyone drop me links via PM as to what I'm missing?
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I think a mod will come along and lock this one up sooner or later.

EDIT: DaveK, I was going to disagree with you, as bigotry is usually caused by religion and politics, but after second thought, my definition may be a tad too narrow, as race is another big cause, albeit, nothing operates in  a vacuum so to speak.

You made me delete my big, long righteous post :D

(It basically said that I guessed you missed some of the background to all of this).

Fair play to you Chako :tu:
I used to come here a lot.

It took me an hour to make my most recent post because of that.  Dave you are just too quick. :)  And +1 to Gareth and RZ too.

Far be it from me to put words in Nuphoria's mouth, but she's referring to the comments about homosexuality and religion that have been made recently, and more specifically about the lack of clear condemnation of those comments.

FWIW, I think you're spot on about the trolling RZ, but there have been some things that go beyond simple trolling, and Nuphoria's point (and mine) is that simply ignoring it isn't enough.

Homosexuality, religion, and politics are ideal fodder for trolls.

Provocative posts on these topics will usually upset someone enough to take the bait and respond.  Provoking a response is the goal.

Beyond simple trolling, which may provoke a response or two, is provoking argument on a bigger scale.

If things go well for the troll, after the first response others will choose sides and jump in.  Then the thread will degenerate into bickering and the troll triumphs.

.

Excellently put RZ. I think the main problem with this one is that we have several members (that we specifically know of) who are ill-served by allowing this particular topic to be ignored. So the usual tactic of ignoring it is tantamount to dismissing it as trivial. But I do think you are spot on.

It took me an hour to make my most recent post because of that.  Dave you are just too quick. :) And +1 to Gareth and RZ too.

OK, but spare me the "I bet that's what your wife says too" jokes, OK? ;)

You are probably right on that account DaveK. I am sure I don't have the whole picture on this issue.

Ok I think we all need to take a deep breath, and maybe calm down a little :)

Chrissy, Dave and the other's are right, there is no excuse for bigotry or any other inciting of hate against our fellow man (or woman).

Freedom of speech is an admirable and worthwhile thing to protect, but not when it's used as a soap box to demean and denigrate other social groups. Then it becomes unacceptable and is liable to get the person(s) responsible either banned, or in some other way punished.

So please let that be a warning to the small minded minority who find this behaviour acceptable.

You're in a difficult situation - no doubt about it.

One upside to this latest thread is definitely that there's not a whole load of disagreeing going on. I'm encouraged by it hugely :)

You make a valid point here, but there may be no easy solution to the problem.

People that I suspect of purposeful trolling, may in fact be only expressing their sincerely held views.  The world has no shortage of sincere a**holes.

Either way, whether you're responding to a troll or to a sincere a**hole, it's usually counterproductive.

I wish I could get my wireless adapter working for Xbox Live.  If I can't I am going to run about 30 feet of Cat 5 along the baseboards.

You have given me an idea

I currently have the supplied cable just about stretching from the router to the Xbox but never thought of getting a longer length  but I will now  :ahhh

More importantly:

Why can't women put on mascara with their mouth closed?
Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?
Why is abbreviated such a long word?
If a cow laughed, would milk come out of it's nose?
Why is "bra" singular and "panties" plural?

Once upon a time Multitool.org was an innocent site where folks confined their discussions to knives and tools and lights and such. Everyone was "new" and just like when visiting the home of a new friend for the first time, strong viewpoints were kept to ones self.

But now, scarcely a year or two later, things have changed. We are much bigger, with many more members. And more importantly as it relates to this topic, most of us feel like this is "home". And just like at our own homes, we tend not to be as gaurded with our thoughts. Opinions are stated and comments are made, sometimes without much regard for who might find offense with them.

We must not let this happen people. Multitool.org is a special place, but it will spiral down the toilet if we allow it to. For our part, we moderators are resolved to run a tighter ship. Statements that were allowed to pass with a warning before will be met with stronger measures in the future. I hope we can continue to walk a fine line between being as fair and non-judgemental as possible, yet strict enough so discussions like these will not feel so necessary.

A HUGE improvement would be strictly limiting the controversial, off topic stuff to the Break Room.

People shouldn't have to wade through threads polluted with politics, religion, etc. over in General Tool Discussion or the Swiss Forum.

If this concept was to be implemented, then people wanting to completely avoid controversial stuff could just stay out of the Break Room.
