I managed to take some photo's of my sisters fav SAK  today I plucked up courage and told her what she has is a "SAK of rubish  a CAK" in fact!

Now before anyone jumps on me about USA V Chinese products I'd be the first to say we really need both  :D

Anyway my gripe is with this pile O sh** seriously it's that badly made  :twak:  I'm thinking it's the first CAK attempt "maybe early 80's"

Lets take a look at the "poo CAK " well safe to say all blades are made from mild steel coated with "rusty" tin. good start  :twak:

gotta love the nail file,it's 4mm thick

the saw is a sore point with me,I tried it on my finger, after a minute my finger was intact tho I noticed some dulling of teeth  ::)

Ok that's it review over  ;) just tell me how I should destroy this piece O sh** I'll gladly take photo's as I'm doing it,but first I need to replace it any SAK will do as I'm sure my sister will appreciate it  :D tell me what Sak I should get her  :salute:

A Vic Ranger would replace that very nicely.
A little Leatherman information.

An almost direct replacement for that "knife" would be either a Fieldmaster (phillips) or Hunstman (corkscrew). Victorinox doesn't make one with both like the one shown here. The Huntsman comes from the factory as a "plus" model, which gives you a pen and eyeglasses screwdriver. For an EDC knife, the "plus" features are a must with me.

The real question is - what does your sister use on the knife? Too often folks pick "the biggest" and then never use half the tools on it. My wife, for example, would never need a wood saw or the metal file, but the inline phillips on her Explorer has come in handy many times. For a mainly suburban/urban environment, I usually recommend either an Explorer Plus or Compact. Since you're in the UK, you could also get her a DofE Pocket Tool instead of the Compact if you think the phillips would be better than the corkscrew.

I totally agree with the Explorer or Climber...either one of those with plus scales would awesome.  The Climber, to me is the best EDC all around SAK.  But if your sister likes to fiddle with stuff then the Explorer.  My sister and my mom love my Explorer...I think I'm getting mom one for her birthday in a couple months.  But I also agree, find out what she uses.  If she wants the Saw but could live without the scissors, my experience with the Hiker so far has been excellent.  Either the inline or backspring phillips would be good...just depends on what she wants.  If I were you, I'd get online and show her either some of the reviews here or sakwiki and ask her what she wants.  Like it or not, your taking her "SAK" away from her because you think she needs a better one....LOL big brother you are now at her mercy.  She's gonna end up with a Swiss WorkChamp LOL!  Seriously, gather up some suggestions here and show them to her...unless it's supposed to be a surprise.

I also have to say 'what would she actually use'  maybe thats the inner big brother in me talking. I got mine a Compact, she is doing several backpacking forrays through south america at the moment and its pretty much got the most tools in the smallest possible package (if i had more time i would of got a 84mm golfer and put on plus scales)

I didn't even stress abot the phillips cause she isn't the sort of girl to use one. (but a little voice now says 'but.. but.. she might need it) A simple quad-screwdiver on a chain/Paracord-fob like my Hustler goes a long way. (i use mine daily now)

Still a nice touch would be a custom sak, with a few photos of its construction and a little letter explaining the components to your sister saying 'This one is uniquely made for you'

i don't know how neil charges for his creations but he is in your neck of the woods. something like based on a Cadet would be awesome. Large blade + combo tool, saw + nailfile, scissors and a paracord quadscrewdriver comes to mind. At a guess slimmer than a 84mm climber/salesman, something she can 'EDC' and infect her with 'ze bug'.

If you are looking for an of the shelf option not yet mentioned i would say the Wenger Traveller
New ones are dirt cheap on ebay (guy in canada, can recomend him BestpricePr)

Its smaller than a climber and trades the small blade for a nailfile. I have also seen 2nd hand vesions pop up with the flat philips instead of nailfile or a backsprung phillips (some are locking blades... but its probably the last thing a copper would think to check on a lady..)
some people will talk about the evils of wenger serrated scissors but i love the superior springless design. and if she needs to cut her nails you are going to give her a classic or a signature for her keyring anyways aren't you ;)

I'll toss in another vote for a Fieldmaster as it's fairly close, but a better choice might be a Hiker + Rambler/Classic.

As for destroying the old one: stick it in a post and shoot it with a centerfire rifle, melt whatever remains.
Post the video and followup pics ;)

[edit for update] Sorry, just saw you're in the UK, so no shooty fun :(  In which case I'll add another vote for Thermite, as nuking it from orbit is probably not a safe practice.

I say Huntsman, or a climber if she doesn't need the saw. I'd guess that the screwdriver on the Vic can opener works better on cross heads than the Phillips on the one she's got now - not so good for poking fish eyes though :)
