I took a picture of its baby sister, the Lee A. Tregurtha, at the ore docks in Marquette. :)

here is the BIG sister

Upper Lakes Shipping Canadian Transfer- 650’6” long 60’ beam. Made 1998 by merging the fore of the Hamilton Transfer and the stern of the Canadian Explorer

I love those battleship with giant cannons, still the best solution for piracy, reactivate a few and station them off coast of Somalia for a few months and problem solved.

Using a battleship for anti-piracy patrol, would be like using a sledgehammer to swat a fly.  ;>

Destroyers, destroyer escorts, and corvettes are far better suited to the job.

Erika Eleniak sure looked good in that flick - she also looked great in "Bordello of Blood" and plenty of other B-movies.  ;>

Rather bloodthirsty, aren't you?

For land bases it'd be much easier and quicker to send in the Air Force with B-52s.

Forget that they are holding hostages - bomb them back to the stone age!

1. Somalian pirates don't hold hostages in their base of operation (village is more appropriate) on land.
2. They tend to be very close to shore and small in size.
3. No, I don't have any sympathy for pirates.

3. No, I don't have any sympathy for pirates.

1. Surely they don't publicize exactly where they are holding the hostages.

2. Which means that a battleship wouldn't be a good tool to deal with those villages, even if the intent was to completely destroy the villages.

3. I too have no sympathy for the pirates.  When captured they should be dealt with in the traditional manner:  a quick military tribunal then hanged by their necks until dead.

But, I have some degree of sympathy for innocents, especially women and children, likely present but uninvolved in piracy.

1. Yes they do, they keep hostages on the ships they hijack, that's how Somalian pirates operate.

2. The whole thing was meant as a joke.

3. Unfortunately it'll never happen. Pirates were captured on many occasions, but they were all released because captors have no jurisdiction over them.

1. From what I've read, they hold hostages on ships only temporarily until they they are transferred to land.  Probably varies depending on the pirate organization involved, but they are prepared to hold hostages for months, even years.

2. My response was meant as a joke too.  AFAIK, there are no longer any battleships in service - at least not with the US Navy.

3. It'll happen if civilized people get sick and tired of piracy.  Jurisdiction in international waters traditionally belongs to whoever is capable and serious about enforcing it.

As far as Somalia is concerned I haven't heard anything in the news about transfer to land, since they tend to hijack commercial ships so the ship's value is probably too high to abandon.

No one wants to get their hands dirty thou, so they just use jurisdiction as an excuse to not act.

If the car's had no fuel/oil's in them then it wouldn't be too bad :)

Just look how the US and Canadian navy sink there old naval vessel's to form artificial reef's :tu:

Of course they have fuel and oil in them, they are all filled at the plant or the internals would rust, and you need fuel to drive them into the ship.

I think you might have the same problems I did, and not be aware of just how massive these things are.  There appears to be little freeboard, but remember, those containers are 40' long and ten feet high, each filled with upwards of 50,000 pounds of cargo.  And, you are just seeing what's above decks- the holds are probably filled below decks as well, meaning the ship is extremely solid and therefore stable.

They will rock in some heavy weather, but the kind of wave that will knock that over is the kind of wave that will wipe out the port it's headed for anyway.

Ours is still operational and still being dumped in.  Of course most of what's dumped in it it sewage since the $100 billion dollars we spent on the treatment plant was apparently not enough to actually build the thing in such a way as it would actually work....   ::)
