Next Purchase
on: January 05, 2010, 04:03:11 PM
I'm thinking about switching from an OHT to an OH Fireman. The belt cutter would be nice, but really the main reason is that I want a corkscrew. I can't tell you how many times over the holidays I needed one and was left staring at that useless Phillips. The Fireman is the OH 111mm with a corkscrew.
I'm trying to talk myself out of it (especially since I just got a Wenger 57, but that's way too big for EDC).

Maybe you should try this one.  Same size as OHT, PE and Corkscrew.

well, since locking one-handers are illegal in germany, my choice was this one:

i like it!

The Forester is a great option!  A little more discrete which can be nice for a large knife. If they would adopt the Wenger pushbutton release for the linerlock I believe I'd buy a few more linerlocks.  I guess that's not going to happen any time soon though.

Thankfully we don't have asinine laws like that here.  I can carry pretty much anything short of a sword.  My limits are more limited to practicality.
I like the Forester, but I'd miss the OH opening.  The plain edge soldier has the 'screw, but I really like the serrations.
The Fireman is still looking like my best option.  I don't think it's that much thicker, nor that much heavier.  Basically the same complement as the 57, but smaller (actually I think I was sent a 58 since it has a Phillips).

Thanks for the suggestions!

My Fireman is here!  Unexpected surprise when I opened it...the main blade is plain edge, and the gutting blade is serrated!  One of each, perfect! :tu:  I never heard of this combination, in fact I heard groaning that two serrated blades didn't make sense.  I guess Vic listened.
I just used it to crack a beer, and will put it to good use over the next week.

I have the photos, but apparently I can't post them from my phone, and I haven't been in front of my computer for a few days. They will be forthcoming I promise.

Strange... I wonder if they have made a change since that's the number for the original with the serrated edge.

We might need Tim to check with Victorinox, or maybe it ended up in the wrong box.

Do you mind saying where you purchased it from?

It would be nice on the New Dual Pro if they offered the same so it did not have two serrated blades, even though they are different geometry.

Thanks for the pics and the number.

I got it from amazon. I was quite surprised to see it had a PE, even the picture and reviews said serrated. The only PE Firemans that I knew of were nail nicks, not OH.
Not that I'm complaining, one SE and one PE are a perfect complement. :sak:

Nice!  Thanks for the information.

I think many people would love it in that combination, but many would also probably be upset they did not get whay they ordered.

I wonder if the change was intentional, but the packaging/speces were not ready, or someone putting together the new PE OHT forgot to switch their parts when they moved onto OHF.

Either way you have a piece of SAK history, probably at least the first documented, if not sold OHF-PE.  I just bought one from them to see if I end up with the same configuration, if I do we'll have to check with Vic I think.  If it was a factory mistake it could be worth a few dollars more than you paid.

I actually like the serrated blades but the PE is very good sometimes and with the other serrated blade it's a pretty good combination.

I ordered a OHF from the same vendor (Amazon) and also received one with a Plain-Edge on the main blade.

Very interesting.

Since the model number did not change on the knife that is a distinct possibility, or it could just be the packaging folks need to catch up.

Maybe Vic is listening to it's customers. Pretty much all the reviews I read complained that having two serrated blades made no sense (I agree). The new style is a fine setup  :tu:

The blades complement each other well, don't they?  My #2 carry, right after the OHT.

I can say much about it yet as I don't EDC any 111mm at the moment.  Lately I added a BO Spirit S to my belt.  Without the bit kit the Spirit is so nice and slim and very light, I don't even know I'm carrying it... it really hides nicely.  I just wanted to try the BO since some of the pictures looked good, but when I saw how slim the case was without the bit-kits I had to try it as part of my EDC and it never got in the way.  The BO one is also a little more stealth and in its fully enclosed black nylon case hides well under my sweaters or coat.  Spring has almost sprung here though so it may get removed from the belt.  ... anyway all this means I've had no need for a 111mm knife in the coat or work bag for a while.

I like the idea; although I don't mind the 2008 Soldier's partially serrated blade.

Anyway I hope to get the chance to check it out more.  I just got a slide-lock Fireman also so I have another PE and serrated carry option.
