Just arrived

I've been wanting one for eons and finally sprung for it...complete with Primus gas burner. It's the 27-7 UL/HA model...I already had a 0.6L teflon-coated Trangia kettle that fits inside the pots.

One thing I was hoping for was that my little cast iron skillet would fit the supports...and it does, sort of. Unfortunately my larger Trangia and GSI kettles do not work with the supports. I'll have to rig up some additional ones to work with those.

I didn't know they made kettles in any colour except silver - I'm bidding on one at the moment as I have fallen in love with it!

I bought that kettle years ago...I think it came out when they first started making teflon-coated sets.

Yup - that's the set I have (except the burner).

Personally, I think it's difficult to see how it could be improved upon, it just works

I think it will depend on intended usage. It would be handy for more complex cooking, multiple pots or dishes that require longer cooking times and simmering/flame control. It would also be nice when using for multiple people.

I suppose for the same price and maximum versatility it might be be wiser to purchase a standalone cartridge stove. That would give you a two-burner capability if needed.

The alcohol burner suffices for me most of the time, but I've begun experimenting with camp food other than Ramen/Potnoodle lately.

I carved that spoon for measuring Bannock mix

One teaspoon baking powder and 1/4 tsp salt to one cup of flour. It also functions as a coffee spoon.

Now, what is bannock?

It's a quick bread made with a basic mix of flour, baking soda and salt - LINK

The base mix is one cup flour, 1-2 tsp baking powder, 1/8-1/4 tsp salt...with enough water added to make a dough. It can be varied by adding dried fruit, nuts, sugar, honey etc...or made as a savory with the addition of meat, cheese, etc. One of my favorites is corn meal substituted for half the flour.

The one in the skillet had a big dollop of evaporated milk added, then fried in shortening...it tasted like a giant pancake with a crispy crust.

This one had honey and pecans added, then baked.
