SOG Toolclip. Blimey I didn't expect that!
on: January 15, 2010, 03:15:58 PM
I've commented before that thanks to this forum I'm rarely surprised by seeing a tool for the first time these days. Normally, any tool I receive for the first time will have had it's pros and cons debated ad infinitum on here, there will be youtube and photo reviews, and of course, as my collection has grown larger, the chances are that I've seen something very like it before anyway. Usually, when something does surprise me, it tends to be disappointment too!

One tool that I've never really pursued or been curious about was the SOG Toolclip, but I had it in mind that it was a huge "Swissgrip" sized beast of a tool that would be too big and too heavy to be practical for EDC and kind of dismissed it thinking, I'll pick one up sometime.....

So, thanks to joeblack and ari6126, I eventually bought one and it arrived this morning. To give you some idea, it sat unopened on my desk here for several hours whilst I did some work, such was my excitement!

So, as I do with all new tools, I unpacked it and started to look it over, open the tools and so on, and I was really very surprised by two main things.

1) Although quite long (5.5"), the tool is actually not that unwieldy. Even with teh attached pocket clip. It is significantly slimmer than my Charge TTi, which opens all sorts of possibilities.

2) The blade doesn't lock  :o I guess I had assumed that it did, but in fact it's a slip-joint. The blade is enormously fat, but is actually sub 3". This means that it is UK legal  :ahhh

I had never taken enough notice of his tool to realise these things, and now have a slim, UK legal tool (that is going straight into the Pocket Organiser) rather than some bloated behemoth that would be better used as an anchor!

What a result!
I used to come here a lot.

I love my Japanese SOG which I also got from joeblack  :D :D.
I did find pocket carry in jeans is a bit painful  :D & not sure having a very sharp large serrated blade on the edge of a file is such a great idea   . But defiantly one tough cool tool.

The manual with mine shows the old blade on the bottle opener, but the tool itself has the newer one.

how does the tool compare, in terms of functionality, to the skeletool? Can anyone post pic of the two tools side by side like the previous ones of the toolclip by the charge?

Here you go.

The Toolclip has a few more features than the Skeletool, but is a bit bigger and heavier (7.19oz v 4.97oz).

I used to come here a lot.

I got a Micro Toolclip from Mike in a trade at last year's meet, and to be honest, I'm not overwhelmed by it.

It's big brother looks a much more likely candidate for having a go with I reckon.

I was trying to remember who ended up with that, I can't say the Micro did anything for me at all either. :-\

The full sized one however looks to be a different kettle of fish altogether. :tu:

Is there a proper term for the finish on the pliers on the Toolclip?

It looks almost like granite. I've seen it before and it's obviously the result of some treatment or process.

It looks exactly like parts at my work that have been heat treated, then sand blasted (to remove the scaley/flakey debris that builds up in the heat treat oven)

There's no particular name we call that finish at work, besides heat-treated-and-sand-blasted. :-\

Sand-blasted. Yep that all makes sense. Thanks Bob.

So would the "sparkly bits" actually be bits of sand then?

Could be.....although I would not have thought the sand would embed. But what else could it be?

Well it could be pixie dust Ben yes  ::)

Or, it could be glass? Doesn't sand under heat and pressure become glass?

DISCLAIMER: I am totally guessing here. It could be as stupid as Ben's theory!

The sand shouldn't embed - the "sparkling" could be the result of the surface texture that sandblasting leaves (its used to clean and roughen surfaces, often in preparation for another coating) - see for example the finishes used by Peter Atwood on his tools http://www.atwoodknives.com/home/spindex.php

Yeah - it's a bit more "granite" like than the Atwoods I've seen at least Peter. I'll try and get a pic that does it justice in daylight tomorrow.

If you mean that it has a sort of "grain" structure, then what you might be seeing is the grain of the metal? (on the scale of a couple of mm)
