Current EDC's .
on: January 19, 2010, 04:05:06 PM
A look at my current faves. I have pretty much standadized on single cell CR123 lites for edc , and work . AAA lites are backups .

For work , my main carry is a Surefire E1B , plenty of power , very rugged , simple user interface . The work back up is a Streamlite Stylus Pro .

The Old Skool McLux III-PD doesn't get carried much , as it is a bit of a classic , and hard to replace .

The Novatac 120 EDC is very nice , but not anywhere near as bright as the Surefire E1B . The interface is a tad bit complicated for an old goat like me .

it rides in the jacket pocket as a spare/battery carrier . The Leatherman Serac S2 is an off duty back up . At work I usually carry the Surefird in a holster . When crawling and playing ruff , I dont trust clips .

The Strider PT is just an attention whore , and came along for the photo shoot .

Those are all nice lights! It is way overkill for me & my humble needs. I read somewhere that cr123's can explode but, I think they were talking about the rechargeable ones. Something about hydrogen gas buildup when charging them.

The explosions have mostly been the result of missmatched cells ( ie; partially discharged mixed with fully charged ) , the have often  involved cheap offshore cells . Alum. body lites are stronger and less likley to go bang . Single cell lites are even safer - only one cell ergo no missmatches . I wouldn't lose any sleep over it !

Doug Ritter has a lengthy article on his Equipped to Survive blog .

It's easy to upgrade the emitter in the Novatacs.  I just did mine (SSC P4 U3SVNH), and it's much brighter.  I get the same runtime on high as with the original emitter, but with greater output.

I probably get about a month to a month an a half out of a cell . I mostly use low , and with hi , I mostly use it on momentary . I always carry two spare on my belt , and a second light in my jacket pocket .

I buy cells by the dozen , and buy Surefire cells for about $2.25 ea. I also have a large stock of Pentagon lite CR123's that cost far less .

U3 is out eh? Time to get out the iron and ditch the U2.  :D

Don't get in a rush....  The U3 designation seems to be just a "tightening up" of the flux bin.  What I mean is, the max possible output of the U3 bin is the same as what U2 was, but the min. spec is higher.

Ah I see, so back to wait for V bin then. U2 has been out for a long time now, guess LED efficiency is approaching peak.
