Leatherman bits. Just how tough are they?
on: January 30, 2011, 02:31:43 AM
Pretty tough it appears.  I've been using the same slotted driver/Phillips driver for almost 2 years.  I've done a TON of electrical work and other basic farm work with this specific bit.  Here's how it looks now:

Here's a comparison to a new combo bit:

The Phillips head is still in good shape, but the slotted has twisted pretty substantially.

It is interesting to note that the new LM combo bit has changed in regards to the shape of the Phillips head:

I'm quite pleased with the durability of the LM bits.  :tu:

It's odd that they changed them a bit  I think that mine have held up very well as well :tu: Don't believe I have had 1 mess up to a point where it can't be used

The old one is still usable, but it tends to slip more under high torque than the new one. (I kept the old one in reserve)

The bits are L7 ( a shock rated steel ) and are quite tuff . The main limitation is in the bit holders , thankfully solved with the advent of the MUT .

I'm going to reaquire a set , and retire my old UTA .

AFAIK the bits are made from S2 shock resistant tool steel, but i would rather see them made from S7, the highest shock resistant version.

If it's S2 I'm happy with the material, the better quality regular driver bits are all made from it. Don't think I've ever seen a S7 driver bit.

And on a related note, it's been a couple years since we've heard about anyone shattering the bit driver.  So they must have sorted that issue. :)

The only time I heard it shatter was a guy opened it at right angle to handles, which were also opened to exert more torque. Don't think one can blame the bit driver on that one.

I'm glad to hear that , I had one screw up on a Skele , never trusted them thereafter . I've been using the UTA on my late model wave . Time to give a Skele. another try !

Hi,
I was just wondering where you ordered this bit from? I have just ordered the bit kit but could not see this particular bit. Can I get it separate? Thanks, Joe.
