New Fuse - Shame about the sheath!
on: January 31, 2010, 08:50:44 AM
I'm not too impressed with the "leather" sheath that came with my new Knifeless Fuse. I've not had it long and the closure flap has already begun to delaminate. Fixed for now with an application of super glue but I'm waiting for the whole thing to disintegrate. Leatherman, this is for you  :twak:

I don't like any of the Leatherman leather sheaths. Leatherman, wake up! You make great tools but your leather sheaths stink.  :-\  Most of the nylon sheaths are ok though.   :tu:
Sometimes change is a good thing, other times not so much!

I am still uncertain if they are even made of real leather.  :D

I think they're probably leather (I'd be surprised if LM would advertise them as such if they weren't), but it's a pretty naff leather isn't it?

Not handled a LM leather sheath myself, their nylon ones are pretty good.

But the leather Vic (spirit) sheaths I have seen, WOW, so compact and well made.

I may be wrong but I get the feeling they're made of leather fibres that are glued together, kinda the MDF of the leather world.  It's only a guess though.  The old leather sheaths like on the PST, Supertool etc. were much nicer. :-\

Although I'm not normally a fan of nylon sheaths they're much better than the leather option.

Chris I have a nylon one you can have if you want, drop me a PM if you're interested. :)

Well, that's the irritating thing about them really Raukodur. Leatherman's leather sheaths were absolutely fantastic, high quality things, until 2004 when they launched the Kick, Fuse, Blast etc and blatantly tried to cut costs.

The old ones are made from decent thickness, good leather that actually got better with use and age. IMO they were actually a bit better than the Vics (which I do like too), but the new ones..... urggghhh - horrible.

I always thought they were compressed cardboard.

A nylon sheath was the first thing I bought after getting my wave.

Honeslty, I think some high quality real leather sheaths are long over due.  There are still some of us around who don't care for nylon.  I doubt there's very may folks that wouldn't be willing to pay the extra $ to get a good leather sheath with their tool.  Heck, I'd even be happy if they were a 15 or 20 dollar "accessory" that was sold seperatly.  Come on Leatherman....

Perhaps the new sheath that they had a SHOT will replace all the current pleather ones they have  I hope so as they looked much better than what is out now :) I have used the leather one that came with the Blast and it was alright but coming from a leather PST sheath I was a bit disappointed :-\

it fits the tool well, the main thing i dont like about the new pouches is the exposed studs in side as think they will scratch the scales,
