Please help with my Leatherman Wave
on: February 01, 2010, 11:18:08 PM
I just received my Leatheman Wave (Black Oxide) today and after going through it, i've found that the saw blade is not engaging the liner lock.

Is there a way for me to fix this or do i need to send it to Leatherman and let them repair it?

Thanks.

I would send it back, the mating surface on the back of the knife blade must provide sufficient room for the liner lock to snap out and engage.

There is no adjustment for this, it is a function of the knife blade is milled.

Is the blade going fully open?

Either way I think this type of fix would would be better off going back to Leatherman.

Sorry to hear about it.

Thanks for the reply Crouton.

Still playing around with the Wave now.  By forcing the saw blade back, the lock engages but only just a bit (less than a mm) to keep it locked and not fold back.

If i can just file that top of the liner lock i can probably fix it and not have to send it back to Leatherman.

If it is engaging a little just keep working it back and forth and it will start to engage better may take some time though :tu:

I had this same issue with the serrated blade on my leatherman charge TTi, where the liner lock was only very partially engaging the tool, and seemed like it could slip.

Seems LM have an issue with their quality control, especially when it comes to liner locks engaging their tools.

My coworker had this exact problem on the wave he got recently.  It was on the PE blade, and the base of the blade was ground at the wrong angle so the liner wouldn't engage.  I love Leatherman, but some stuff I'm seeing is making me question their quality control recently.

It does seem to be becoming increasingly common doesn't it?

Something else isn't right in that picture and it took me a while to figure out what it was.

The gap between the saw's tang and the frame (where the bronze washer is) is too big. Does the saw have play from left to right as you're looking at the picture? I've just chacked a few Waves and Charges, and none of them have that much space inbetween.

I'm just wondering if it needs a bit of tightening.

My charge tti I just got it does the same thing on the saw. I took the blade out and filed it some. Just remember to do it a little at a time. The liner lock is supposed to be in the middle of the blade not all the way to the side. This gives it some wear room. :multi:

For reasons of safety, send it back!

The Wave's saw blade is fully engaging the liner lock now by opening it firmly.    But boy does my thumbs hurt after opening and closing it over and over and over.   :D

Thanks for all your help.

Good news.  :tu:

As I have said many times before, the locks on my Original Wave were so shockingly awful that they nearly put me off the whole concept of liner locks.  Luckily for me I got rid, and have since had many decent liner locking tools and knives.  LM really drop the bomb in this area, quite frequently as well.

This is the very reason I payed full UK retail price for my Wave , so I could go into a shop and actually look at it and check it over .

In that picture - that blade isn't seated right. You shouldn't have the gap between the blade and frame.

Has it straightened up now the lock is engaging, because if it loose - you're going to have problems in the future I think if it's not tightened.
