Not sure if yours are black or blue but the blue Nishijin Crickets are absolutely stunning.

You have one too? My Cricket is black. It's nice to open, looks good and does decent packaging work.

I don't' sadly :( they're just too nice for me I'd muddy it up and I wouldn't want it to be a safe queen. But I have seen quite a few pics and vids and they are very fetching.

Go ahead and muddy it up! Use it to open letters, packages, cords, flicking exercise for the hands, as a money clip or even as paperweight. The blade tip on mine has tape adhesive already. Yet to find good use of the S curve edge though.

I prefer to use stuff as it creates "use" values and "character" of the object. If it becomes a safe queen, it can be transferred to someone else if need be.

Have a good day!

Pretty sure it's a manix.

You're right.  I didn't notice the lock, just the handle shape.

Yep it is the OG Manix, the C95.

Thoughts on the upcoming Para 2? (dark blue, S110V). Anyone getting one? I've been torn about steel lately. I love knife steel and learning about steel, it's my favorite thing. The metallurgy, the look, the properties, everything. So I have long wanted one of the current 'super' steels, like cts-20cp, m390, ZDP-189, S110V.

BUT- and it's a big one, I can't figure out why anyone needs a knife that takes forever to dull, then forever to sharpen. My knives don't go dull before I'm done using them ever. I don't imagine most peoples do. Yet the super steels are very popular. Which is fair, I want one myself. I guess I just find it hard to see the value in the extra money for a "better" steel in a knife I can get in something just fine.

It makes me think of the Manix 2 in cts-bd1. It gets a lot of hate on BF (cts-bd1), but it's just G2 (gin-1), which was fine when it was around. The Manix 2 lightweight in bd1 and hopefully frn will be my next spydie, unless I can talk myself into the new Para. Which, even my beautiful S30V hasn't lost an edge on. At all. Despite cardboard.

Just the ramblings of a wannabe steel metallurgist who loves his knives :D

Before I learned to sharpen I was all about super-steel or replaceable blades... So, I think there are three reasons

1) If you can't sharpen its awesome as you don't need to bring the knife into service that often.
2) Its interesting from a material-science point of view
3) Stats matter, whether its more HP on a car, more RAM in your computer its just awesome for bragging rights...

Yep, well said.

Big steel snob but after a lot of thinking about the subject I have decided that S30V is plenty good and it sure is hard to tell the difference between it and say 110V. Unless you're trying to sharpen it.

That said I still plan to buy all them super steels and sprints but do it knowing it is for the reasons you mentioned. Not some huge performance difference.

Like most other things you can't usually stay in business selling the same thing for years even if it's nearly perfect. You have to make changes so your marketing guys have something to do. How much more so if you're a public company and trade stock.

Anyway most people who buy knives don't know how to sharpen them and don't have the right equipment to do it and edge holding is important because that's how many people judge knives. You can't beat the 5 dollar sharpening service from Spyderco, especially when they will sharpen combo edge knives and Benchmade and Gerber won't. You can send 100 knives back to the factory for the price of one Spyderco sharpening kit.

But then I wouldn't have the satisfaction of doing it myself. Not to mention I can make it way sharper then Spyderco does. SE being the exception but I am working on that.

100 knives times five dollars is 500 dollars right? Has there been a price change on the Sharp maker?

That's fine for people who are knife enthusiasts, hunters, etc. But we are not the majority. Many people buy just one knife and if it doesn't come sharp and stay sharp it's not considered a good knife.

100 knives times five dollars is 500 dollars right? Has there been a price change on the Sharp maker?

I remembered wrong. I thought they would do 5 knives at a time for 5 bucks. It's 4:

"REPAIR INFORMATION
Blade Sharpening: Complimentary on PlainEdges, SpyderEdges and CombinationEdges provided. Please include $5.00USD for shipping and handling. $5.00 will cover the return shipping cost for up to 4 knives."

So make that 80 knives / 4 = 20 batches of knives * 5 bucks a batch = 100 bucks. Still pretty economical.

I thought it was about 50 dollars for a SM but yeah not a bad deal. Especially if you only own one knife. Sucks that you don't have a knife while it is gone though.

"Super" steels are great but I get the most use out of the cheaper stuff.
BD1,  AUS8 and 8CR13MoV are so easy to keep sharp you don't need much more.
A working knife gathers no rust.

Serrated H1 seems to jump to attention and sharpen up as soon as it's in the same room as the sharp maker.
Plain edge H1 loses its shaving edge if you even look at it; it seems.
It's soft but does its specific task really well, same with budget steels on real world working knives.

Cost vs edge retention vs sharpening vs toughness vs corrosion resistance

I'd get by with a $20 Byrd Cara Cara in 8cr13 to be honest but M4, 204P and H1 are the current toys being played with and it's good to know their values.

I personally don't think H1 is going anywhere it's rust proof and's been around for what twelve years? I heavily agree with CTS BD1 though, it is an excellent steel I like it a lot more than AUS8 and 8cr13mov I would very much like to see it on more knives in the future.

Haha, it does. I'll drive closer next time and grab it, didn't feel like carrying it out then. Not sure what it is yet, some type of rusty bucket?

My first "proper" Spydercos got here. These are my first thoughts:

Paramilitary 2 - As amazing as everybody said.. flawless fit and finish, perfect ergonomics, great looks, perfect lock-up, very sharp... I really really like it... although I can't say I like it 3-5 times more than my Tenacious to reflect the price difference

Dragonfly 2 ZDP-189 - Also amazing.. sharpest knife I've ever seen, perfect fit and finish and amazing grip... you wouldn't believe something that small can be that ergonomic.. also quite pretty and easy to open and close one-handed (despite the size). FRN is nice and grippy but looks as cheap in person as in the photos  :-\ . At least the colour is pretty. Must find a proper sized lanyard for extra grip... the Vic one works but looks awful.

The Para 2 is in no way 3 to 5 times better than a Tenacious but in a few years the extra hundred or so you spent will be forgotten but it will still be a better knife.
