Brittle Little Files
on: February 16, 2010, 07:53:58 PM
I hope I'm not making enemies in the sog forum, but I am very unimpressed with the sog file quality. I have had a broken file on my powerlock for a while and I decided to take inspiration from the book of Vic and make a scraper/chisel out of it.  To test what kind of tools I needed for this, I ran the  broken edge across a file and SNAPPPPP. the file broke in 3 pieces at the bolt of the tool with a frankly childish amount of pressure.
Has anyone else ever experienced file trouble like this? I'm praying that I just got a lemon cuz I would hate to embargo sog for a one in a million mistake.

you cant make a chisel from a file!

files have to be hard to keep there edge so there carbon content is high, this makes them brittle which could be why it broke.

im guessing your file is a bit off a fluke unless you were applying alot of shear force to it

You might have had better luck using a grinder wheel to turn the file into a scaper.

 :tu: on the grinder

I had to test the hardness on such a tool before I took any real action on it. unfortunately I didn't get past the testing phase :-[

Never had a problem with the files from SOG
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

I ain't use it as no pry bar!
I glided it across a file to assess what needed to be done to turn a useless shard of file into a vaguely useful scraper

Files need to be made soft again by re-heating then left to cool slowly  :tu:
