The Warhammer Thread
on: February 22, 2010, 05:38:40 AM
I've noticed lots of Warhammer and 40K references and avatars around here of late.  Which of you guys and gals is into the whole Warhammer thing?

I stopped collecting a while ago, still read the books from time to time.

Used to play Warhammer 40K Space Marines, Tau and Orks.  I've played Necromunda with an Escher and Enforcer gang and I've got about five different Battelfleet gothic fleets.

Anyone else?

Not into the modeling/gaming aspect much tbh.

But I really do love the book's and the general mythology of both the Old World and 40K :tu:

I used to play the Warhammer fantasy RPG many years ago, also a little bit of table top 40K but that was much more my brother's thing.

I've read some of the books but TBH I find them a bit formulaic, but sometimes that's exactly what you want. They can certainly be good bits of rip-roaring hokum, and that's no bad thing. :D  As you say Mike the "world" is so in-depth it adds a lot to the read.

Yes I used to be into the Warhammer stuff about a decade back, I still occasionally paint and might post a few pics later.

I'm much more into board games these days and as games workshop have sold a lot of licences so I still play a few bits but nothing with a ruler or massive armies to buy.

As with Mike - I can't keep up with the collecting/painting/modding cult, but I enjoy the mythology of it.

I have read many of the books, and certainly love the more recent computer games. I was never into the old school table top games unless it was D&D, but that was in my youth when parents frowned on that sort of thing. :D

Always been curious about it, never checked it out. I have nobody to play tabletop with. One day I may check out the video games or read a book or two to start learning some of the mythos. It always sounded kinda cool.

The background is great - its so vast it really adds depth to the books and the models - you can take that background story and base your armies on it.  The main problem with the hobby is that its so expensive - much more expensive than MT collecting.  Some of my mates used to call it 'plastic crack'  :D

Some pictures of a few of my models (most unfinished unfortunately - I can't find lots of my newer pictures)

Begone naysayer!  :D :D

I just got started in it.Yesterday I went and dropped $200.00 on some plastic crack.
My army is Chaos Black Legion.

Twenty years ago I played Battletech. Then everyone quit playing around here and
that was it.Flash forward to last month,a friend at work got to talking about 40k, and then he brought me some
books to read, and the rest is history.

Also I bought my ticket to Games Day this morning.

I overheard a kid telling his dad about WH40k in the doctors waiting room a week or so back.

I'm not sure what I found funnier, the kids strange conceptions of the game (I'm guessing he had just heard about it that day at school) or his father's total scepticism and doubt on the whole issue.

Nice bit of modeling Rich!

I bet that (Wraithship or Shadowsword?) set you back a bit :o

I think everyone should at least read one of the books. They make bloody good reading, and are not at all childish despite there reputation :)

Ah, that's more like it. :salute:

I was much more into Battletech than I ever was 40K.  I'm old enough to have started playing before they brought back the Clans. :-[

I've never gotten into any table top games, always had a passing interest but never enough to investigate further. I used to enjoy painting miniatures tho, and had some (as did Grant I recall)

I've always been a fan of realtime strategy games on PC, and Warhammer 40k Dawn of war series is awesome. Mind you in the past I was hooked on Total Annihilation, Command & Conquer (normal, red alert), Starcraft, Warcraft 1&2, Dune, etc.

A long time ago I played a Battletech game that was more like Mechwarrior style... I always sort of liked it. (and I'm still waiting on that free release of mechwarrior 4 revamp that is supposed to be released some time ago by http://battletech.catalystgamelabs.com/ )

More recently War Front: Turning Point, Company of Heroes.

Haven't tried Dawn Of War II yet, looking forward to Starcraft 2.

I was slightly disappointed in Dawn of War II.

That could be because I had bought all of the expansions for Dawn of War, which greatly expanded the gaming experience. That and the changes in game play in the newer game left me a bit cold.

Sequels rarely deliver when they try to outdo what was good in a game. I'm still intrigued to see DOW2, but like you, the expansions for DOW were fantastic.

Cool. I used to build models, but mostly planes and cars... didn't have internet & digital cameras back then to document it... most are long gone nowadays.
